www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball returned to the court Friday evening, but were unable to keep pace with the Medgar Evers College Cougars (5-9, 2-6 CUNYAC) in an 86-38 CUNYAC road setback from Cougars Cave.
How it Happened
- With both teams trading baskets in the early going, Alicia Gumbs stuck a jumper for her sixth point to put York ahead 6-5 with 3:45 remaining on the first-quarter clock.
- Playing ahead for the final 33:09, Medgar Evers responded with a 15-0 scoring spree to close out the quarter as York went cold, misfiring on five attempts from the field while committing five turnovers to trail 20-6 at the end of the first.
- After Madison Plaza's layup 2:03 in got York on the second-quarter scoreboard, the Cougars went on an 18-0 surge to go up 40-8 with 2:29 left.
- Trailing 46-16 at intermission, Gumbs rattled off 10-straight points before Plaza finished the fastbreak during a third-quarter stretch that saw York outplay Medgar Evers with a 12-10 scoring edge.
- The Cougars owned a 23-9 scoring advantage in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gumbs had a big game, finishing with 25 points (9-of-31 FG, 6-of-7 FT), four steals, three assists and three rebounds in 40 minutes of action.
- Making her season debut, Imani Gibson followed with seven points and a career-high 21 rebounds (seven offensive).
- Plaza chipped in six points to go along with three helpers and three rebounds.
For Medgar Evers
- Aaliyah Lyons scored an efficient 18 points (7-of-13 FG, 2-of-4 3FG) while adding five steals and five assists to her stat line.
- Jennifer Metra (13 points), Sheily Quezada (12 points), Andecia Liverpool (11 points) and Britonya Lloyd (10 points) followed with double-digit scoring efforts.
- Liverpool, Quezada and Mariame Gueye each grabbed 12 rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 20.9 percent (14-of-67) from the field, 6.3 percent (1-of-16) from beyond the arc, and 56.3 percent (9-of16) from the free-throw line. Medgar Evers hit 44 percent (37-of-84) from the floor, 25 percent (4-of-16) from 3-point territory, and 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from the stripe.
Outside the scoreline, the Cougars held the edge in rebounds (71-34), assists (23-7), steals (15-8), and blocks (5-0). Medgar Evers also owned the advantage in points in the paint (50-18), points off turnovers (29-13), second-chance points (26-5), and fast break scoring (18-4).
