JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball returned to home court Tuesday evening, but after a back-and-forth first half, the Cardinals were unable to keep pace with the City College of New York Beavers (2-14, 1-8 CUNYAC), falling 59-46 in a CUNYAC matchup from York College Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- An even game in the first quarter, CCNY's Sarah Blenvins made a jumper to level the score at seven with 4:40 remaining.
- The Cardinals took a three-point edge (12-9) after Alicia Gumbs sank two freebies.
- After Kasia Morrison gave the Beavers a two-point lead (16-14) with nine seconds showing on the clock, Gumbs drilled a long range buzzer beater to give York a 17-16 advantage after the first quarter.
- Imani Gibson's jumper at the 8:44 mark of the second quarter re-established a three-point lead (22-19) for the Cardinals.
- Trailing 21-20, CCNY went on an extended 8-2 spurt to take a 28-23 edge with 3:45 left in the half.
- Morrison's jumper with 55 seconds remaining ended the first-half scoring to put the Beavers up, 32-25.
- Morrison's two freebies at 5:37 of the third stanza gave the Beavers their first double-digit lead (38-28).
- As the aggressor, CCNY outpaced York 15-7 in the final 5:37, heading into the last period with a 50-35 cushion.
- Battling back, the Cardinals opened the fourth quarter on an 8-1 surge to trim the deficit to eight (51-43) with 6:24 remaining.
- Two free-throws by Gibson got the score to 52-45, but the Cardinals could not get closer than seven points in the final 5:06 as CCNY ended the game on a 7-1 run.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gumbs paced the team with 26 points (7-of-16 FG, 11-of-14 FT), eight rebounds, and four assists.
- Imani Gibson tallied her second consecutive 21-rebound effort and also totaled a game-high five steals.
- Madison Plaza chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.
- Nadaysia Nivar helped in the paint with six rebounds.
For CCNY
- Morrison led the Beavers with 21 points (7-of-16 FG, 6-of-8 FT) to go along with three rebounds and three steals.
- Anais Rosa tallied 19 points, six rebounds, and a team-best four dimes.
- Jocelyn Ramos grabbed 10 rebounds, while Blenvins hauled in a team-leading 13 boards.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 26.8 percent (15-of-56) from the field, 12.5 percent (1-of-8) from long distance and 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the charity stripe. CCNY connected on 35.9 percent (23-of-64) of their shots, shooting 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from beyond the arc and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the free-throw line.
York won the battle of the boards (40-36), but the Beavers maintained an advantage in assists (13-5) and steals (14-7). Regarding ball control, the Cardinals scored 10 points off turnovers, while CCNY turned 26 York giveaways into 14 points. The big difference was the 38-18 edge for the Beavers in paint scoring.
