York College men's basketball completed the season sweep Friday over the Medgar Evers College Cougars (2-18, 0-9 CUNYAC) with a 95-73 CUNYAC road win inside Cougars Cave.
How it Happened
- The Cardinals got off to a hot start as Olawale Kila canned a jumper at the 16:24 mark to put York up, 10-0.
- Clawing back, the Cougars went on an extended 17-11 burst to trim the deficit to four (21-17).
- Leading 28-23 with 8:42 remaining, the Cardinals pushed their lead to a first-half high 16 points (43-27) after Tyres Desinor's layup with 3:42 showing on the clock.
- Two free throws by Medgar Evers' Jackson Bartley with 27 seconds remaining made it 47-35 York at intermission.
- Nicholas Guillen drained a jumper for the Cougars' first possession of the second period that pulled Medgar Evers within 10 (47-37).
- Responding with poise, Abdul Seck's layup with 12:20 left gave the Cardinals the game's first lead over 20 points (63-42).
- York held a 20+ point lead for the final 12:20, with Aidony Nivar's free throw near the end of the contest generating a game-high 29-point advantage (92-63).
Leading the Cardinals
- Kila posted 19 points (7-of-10 FG, 5-of-5 FT) and 10 rebounds to produce his 10th double-double of the season (19th career).
- Nivar contributed 17 points (5-of-12 FG, 6-of-7 FT), four steals and four rebounds.
- Tafari Jerome sparked York off the bench with 16 points (6-of-10 FG, 1-of-1 3FG, 3-of-3 FT), four assists and two blocks.
- Bryce Haynes netted a career-high 13 points (4-of-6 3FG), and also went for five assists and two steals.
- Desinor added 12 points (6-of-11 FG), eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal.
- Rohan Singh chipped in eight points, four steals and four assists.
For Medgar Evers
- Nicholas Guillen paced the Cougars with 21 points (8-of-22 FG, 3-of-10 3FG, 2-of-2 FT) and five assists.
- Michael Perez and Joshua Jean Pierre followed in scoring with 15 and 14, respectively.
- Derek Wicker pulled down 10 boards (six offensive) and scored nine points to control the paint.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot a monstrous 56.5 percent (35-of-62) from the field, 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from 3-point distance, and 75 percent (18-of-24) from the charity stripe. Medgar Evers shot 38.2 percent (26-of-68) from the floor, 23.3 percent (7-of-29) from beyond the arc, and 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from the free-throw line.
York maintained an advantage over Medgar Evers in the rebound (40-37), assist (22-15), steal (15-13), and block (5-2) categories. The Cardinals ran in transition, turning 25 Cougar follies into 31 points, totaling 22 fast break points which helped the massive 52 points in the paint output.
