www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball was unable to overcome a 14-point halftime deficit as a second-half push came up short Wednesday evening, dropping a CUNYAC road encounter to the Hunter College Hawks (7-11, 4-3 CUNYAC) by the final count of 89-74 (Jan. 17) inside Hunter Sportsplex.
How it Happened
- Tyres Desinor converted a 3-point play at the 14:06 mark of the first half to give York a 14-11 lead.
- A 3-point bomb by Corey Jones Jr. capped off a 12-4 burst to give the Hawks a 23-18 edge with 9:44 remaining in the half.
- Ahead 23-21, three quick triples gave Hunter its first double-digit advantage (32-21) of the game.
- Trading baskets, the Hawks outscored York 18-15 over the final 7:40 to lead 50–36 at intermission.
- Trailing 56-43, Desinor's triple culminated a 7-0 spurt to trim York's deficit to six (56-50) with 14:58 to play.
- York continued to push by making it a one possession game on three separate occasions in the final stanza.
- With 13:59 showing on the second-half clock, Tafari Jerome sank a pair of free throws to cap a 12-2 scoring spree to pull York within three (58-55).
- Olawale Kila dropped in layups on back-to-back possessions to trim Hunter's lead to three (64-61) with 9:51 left.
- Responding with poise, the Hawks charged ahead on a 17-0 run over the next 4:20 to take an 81-61 lead.
- Despite outsourcing Hunter 9-3 over the final 2:38, the Cardinals were unable to mount another comeback, falling 89-74.
Leading the Cardinals
- Kila paced the squad with a game-high 27 points (11-of-22 FG, 5-of-6 FT), to go along with nine rebounds, four steals, four assists, and two blocks.
- Desinor contributed 14 points (5-of-7 FG, 3-of-4 FT) and five rebounds.
- Jerome returned to the court with 11 points (3-of-8 FG, 4-of-4 FT) and a team-leading five dimes.
- Aidony Nivar chipped in with 10 points (4-of-10 FG, 2-of-8 3FG) and three steals.
- Rohan Singh added eight rebounds and four assists.
- Off the bench, Austinson Cooke pulled down six rebounds as Elie Mondelus nabbed two steals.
For Hunter
- Jack Meyers led the Hawks with 22 points (8-of-15 FG, 5-of-7 3FG).
- Luka Jakic recorded a double-double with 17 points (4-of-11 FG, 9-of-11 FT) and 11 rebounds, to go along with six assists and three steals.
- Jones Jr. netted 14 points (4-of-7 3FG, 2-of-2 FT).
- Kareem McDonald produced an all-around effort with 10 points, seven boards, three assists, and a team-high four swipes.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 43.3 percent (29-of-67) from the field, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from 3-point distance, and 85.7 percent (12-of-14) from the charity stripe. Hunter hit 43.9 (29-of-66) from the floor, a scorching 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from long range, and 81 percent (17-of-21) from the free-throw line.
York outplayed Hunter in steals (11-7) and points in the paint (38-28). The Hawks won the battle in the rebound (43-34), assist (25-22), and block (8-4) departments. Both squads each had 13 second-chance points, while Hunter utilized their pace to outscore York 25-12 in transition.
