@yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball tops John Jay for 74-68 CUNYAC win

York College travels Friday (Jan. 26) for a CUNYAC bout at Medgar Evers College

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball returned to their winning ways Tuesday evening with a 74-68 wire-to-wire CUNYAC triumph over the visiting John Jay College Bloodhounds (6-13, 2-6 CUNYAC) inside York College Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • The Cardinals shot out of a cannon early as Bryce Haynes' triple gave them a 9-2 start. 
  • Easing into the game, TJ Chisholm canned a 3-pointer to put the Bloodhounds within two (17-15) at the 13:40 mark.
  • York hit the gas pedal, going on a 24-6 burst over the next 8:37 to lead 42-21. 
  • John Jay closed the half on a 10-2 spurt, with Garrison Watkins' layup with 20 seconds showing to cut the score to 44-31.
  • A back-and-forth battle to start the second period, Aidony Nivar's triple with 9:02 remaining maintained York's 13-point edge (55-42).
  • Charging back, Watkins capped off John Jay's furious 14-4 run to make it a one-possession affair (59-56) at the 5:33 mark.
  • Tyres Desinor quieted down the run with a 3-point play to make it 62-56 York.
  • Leading 66-63, Desinor dropped a shake and bake layup on John Jay to put York ahead 68-63 with 2:24 showing on the clock.
  • Back to a one-possession game (68-65), Desinor drained two clutch freebies with 56 seconds left to push the score to 70-65.
  • Helped by the intense defense, York closed out a 74-68 triumph after Nivar canned two free throws late.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Desinor paved the way for the victory with a season-high 23 points (10-of-19 FG, 3-of-5 FT) and 13 rebounds (second double-double of the season), to go along with four dimes and two blocks.
  • Olawale Kila added 17 points (5-of-11 FG, 7-of-8 FT), and matched Desinor's total in rebounds, assists, and blocks to register his ninth double-double of the season (18th career).
  • Nivar contributed 16 points (3-of-8 3FG, 7-of-7 FT) and a team-best two steals.
  • Rohan Singh netted 12 points (3-of-4 3FG) and distributed four assists.
  • Haynes played a career-best 37 minutes and sank two momentum-changing threes and dished out three assists.
For John Jay
  • Watkins recorded a double-double with 26 points (12-of-24 FG) and 12 rebounds.
  • Jamir Stewart chipped in with 12 points and four steals. Isaac Holmes tallied nine points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
  • Chisholm and Jordan Evelyn both totaled four dimes, while Evelyn hauled in nine boards. 
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field, a scorching 50 percent (8-of-16) from downtown, and 81.8 percent (18-of-22) from the charity stripe. John Jay hit 34.2 percent (25-of-73) from the floor, 24.1 percent (7-of-29) from long distance and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the free-throw line. 

York turned defense into offense, outscoring John Jay in fastbreak points (17-10) and points off turnovers (21-10). Inside, the Bloodhounds had a slim margin in rebounds (39-38), also outplaying York in paint scoring (34-26) and second-chance points (20-12).
