@yorkcardinals Women’s Soccer strikes against Lehman

York College returns to the pitch Tuesday (Oct. 3) for a non-conference affair at Brooklyn College

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer completed their two-match homestand Thursday afternoon, falling to the Lehman College Lightning (1-4-1) by the final count of 10-1 in a non-conference faceoff from Roy Wilkins Park.

First-Half Breakdown
  • Barbara Meda started the game on fire for Lehman by scoring 1:41 into the match.
  • The Lightning applied more pressure to the Cardinal defense, but were regularly thwarted by goalkeeper Naomi Alejandra Rodriguez (0-1-0), who saved 10 shots in the first period.
  • York grew into the match, as Zaria Neptune fired her first of a career-high five shots at the 12:29 mark to break the Cardinals into the shot column.
  • Following back-to-back attempts on target by Alisha Adams, Neptune finished a feed from Melanie Guerrero in the 26th minute to deliver the equalizer for her second-career goal.
  • Lehman quickly regained the lead as Meda netted a second goal at the 30:29 mark.
  • Melanie Siranaula put the game out of reach as she recorded a hat trick in under five minutes, giving the Lightning a 5-1 edge entering the second frame. 

"Zaria was shifted to the striker position for the first time this season and was a ble to contribute a goal. She also put a lot of pressure on the opposing defense. We will continue to work on a more organized and fluid attack and believe that we can improve our scoring output."-said head coach Winston Willabus

Second-Half Breakdown
  • The Lightning tested the Cardinal defensive unit as Lehman put up eight shots in the opening 13:22 of second-half action, converting on goals in the 53rd, 54th and 59th minutes to make it an 8-1 game.
  • Diallo Ramatoulaye scored in the 81st minute and struck again 3:32 later to settle the 10-1 final. 
  • York's offensive attack was limited in the final 45 minutes with Neptune accounting for the lone shots in the 73rd and 85th minutes.  
Inside the Box Score
York set seasons-highs with five corner kicks and put up seven of its season-high nine shots in the first half.  Lehman finished with the advantage in shots (32-9) shots on goal (25-3)  while York owned the edge in corners (5-0). Alejandra Rodriguez defended York's goal by turning away a career-high 14 saves as Ramatoulaye (two saves) and Melanie Siranaula combined for Lehman's win. The Cardinals totaled 15 stops on the day to mark their highest output since producing 17 saves against Brooklyn College on October 19, 2021.
