York College completes a two-match homestand next Thursday (Oct. 5) against SUNY Maritime College

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball went back and forth Tuesday evening against the University of Valley Forge Patriots (2-10), ultimately falling (25-9, 25-23, 25-22) from York College Gymnasium.

"Valley Forge was the perfect challenge we needed to showcase what we worked so hard at during practices. We were able to win some long rallies and keep the match close to the end. There is still a lot of work to be done but we are very happy with what they accomplished."-said head coach Mario Tang

First Set Breakdown
  • York claimed the first point of the set.
  • Valley Forge scored seven unanswered points to take a 7-1 lead.
  • Ahead 8-4, the Patriots went on an 8-0 burst to take a 16-4 edge.
  • Buoyed by two kills and an ace from Unique Castilho, Valley Forge took the opening set 25-9.
Second Set Breakdown
  • The Cardinals raced out to a 9-2 advantage courtesy of kills by Madison Plaza, Nadaysia Nivar, and Samantha Panameno.
  • Trailing 12-7, the Patriots took six of the following points to level the score at 13.
  • After trading points, Valley Forge found breathing room by going up 20-16.
  • York surged forward on the serve of Cherub Autar, claiming the next six points to take a 22-16 lead.
  • Behind 23-21, helped by Caitlyn Fisher's serve, the Patriots won four consecutive points to take the stanza.
Third Set Breakdown
  • Both squads went back and forth in the third period, as the score was tied at six early on.
  • Valley Forge sprinted ahead with a 11-2 burst, taking a 17-8 lead.
  • Battling back, the Cardinals went on their own 11-2 run, leveling the score at 19.
  • 21-21 a piece, the Patriots closed out the match on a 4-1 spurt.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Nivar spearheaded York's play, totaling a team-high four aces, 17 swing attempts, and 11 digs to go along with three kills. The swing attempt and dig totals were career highs.
  • Panameno recorded two kills and an ace.
  • Shamonie Miller added three kills and seven digs.
  • Cherub Autar quarterbacked the squad with eight assists and chipped in with two kills and a blocked shot.
  • Andrea Wright also tallied two kills and a blocked shot.
For Valley Forge
  • Castilho paced the Patriot attack with a game-high seven kills and 20 total attacks to go along with three aces. She also had a match-leading 12 digs.
  • Rhena Lauver chipped in with four kills, five aces, and a blocked shot.
  • Caitlyn Fisher controlled the pace of play, recording a match-high 10 assists to build upon her 11 digs and five aces.
  • Marie English added two kills and four aces.
  • Telia Robinson totaled 10 digs.
Inside the Box Score
York hit at a rate of -.053 compared to -.013 for the Patriots. Valley Forge also led the way in kills (19-13), aces (20-6), assists (17-11), and digs (43-36), while the Cardinals finished with more blocked shots (2-1).

The Cardinals (1-5) return to home court next Thursday (Oct. 5) in a non-conference showdown against the SUNY Maritime College Privateers (3-7) at 6 p.m. inside York College Gymnasium.
