@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball elevates play against Maritime

York College returns to the court Saturday (Oct. 7) in CUNYAC road tri-match against CCNY and Baruch College

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball improved across the match Thursday evening against the SUNY Maritime College Privateers (5-9) but could break through, falling (25-9, 25-13, 25-22) from York College Gymnasium.

First Set Breakdown
  • Maritime claimed the opening five points.
  • Ahead 6-2, the Privateers won the following six points on the serve of Ashley Pavarini.
  • York utilized a 6-3 run to cut the deficit to seven (15-8).
  • The Privateers closed out the set by taking 10 of the final 11 points.
Second Set Breakdown
  • The Cardinals held an early slim advantage of 2-1.
  • As both squads traded points, a nicely placed kill by York's Andrea Wright made it 7-5 Maritime.
  • Kills by Jessica Mele, Samantha Hart, and Diana Rodrigez gave the Privateers a 10-5 edge.
  • Leading 12-9, Maritime went on an 8-1 burst to push the lead to 20-10.
  • A service ace from Nadaysia Nivar gave York hope at 21-13, but the Privateers controlled the final four points to win the stanza.
Third Set Breakdown
  • The Privateers jumped out to a 9-2 lead.
  • York scored five unanswered to trim the lead to two (9-7).
  • A block by Hart gave the Privateers a 13-7 advantage.
  • Trailing 15-8, a kill by Shamonie Miller sparked a 4-0 run for the Cardinals.
  • Maritime responded with a 5-1 spurt to push the score to 20-13.
  • Making the Privateers work, the Cardinals stormed back from 22-15 to make it a 24-22 game.
  • A service error from Wright ended the match.

  • Nivar recorded a season-best three block shots to go along with two kills and an ace.
  • Miller added three kills, one block, and six digs.
  • Wright chipped in with two kills and a season-best two blocks.
  • Alicia Gumbs spearheaded York's attack with three kills and three aces, tying a career-high with six points.
  • Cherub Autar paced the team with five assists and seven digs.
  • Samantha Panameno contributed four assists.
For Maritime
  • Mele finished with match-highs in points (8), kills (2), and total attacks (19).
  • Hart had a match-best five aces.
  • Pavarini set her teammates up on 14 occasions. 
  • Erica Pagano tallied six kills, three aces, and 19 attempts.
  • Kelly Kuhn and Diana Rodriguez both accumulated six points

York hit at a rate of -.104 compared to .078 for the Privateers. Maritime also maintained an advantage in kills (25-12), aces (15-4), assists (21-12), and digs (43-33), while the Cardinals totaled more blocked shots (6-4).
