@yorkcardinals Men’s Volleyball hosts Medgar Evers for Senior Day doubleheader

York College returns to the court Thursday (Apr. 6) to oppose City College of New York in a CUNYAC road showdown

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball closed out their CUNYAC home slate Wednesday evening with a Senior Day doubleheader against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (6-14, 3-11 CUNYAC), falling in straight sets (25-0, 25-0, 25-12) in game one, and (25-8, 25-9, 25-7) in the second contest.

Prior to first serve, senior Alex Winter (2022-23) was honored for his commitment to York College athletics.  

"Unfortunately, what should have been a close set of games wasn't as close as I had hoped. But the guys still worked through adversity and tried to do their best."-said head coach Anthony Reyes

Game 1: Medgar Evers 3, York 0 (25-0, 25-0, 25-12)

How it Happened
  • Medgar Evers claimed the first set 25-0.
  • The Cougars took home the second frame 25-0 as well. 
  • Both teams canceled each other out early on, with the score level at 2.
  • A 9-1 run for the Cougars gave them an 11-3 edge. 
  • A kill by Winter inched York closer at 13-7.
  • Carlos Abreu struck down a kill, extending Medgar Evers' advantage to 22-9. 
  • Glenver Stuart smashed down two kills for York to trim the deficit to 23-12, before losing the match.  
Leading the Cardinals
  • Stuart attacked with force, totaling 10 attack attempts and a career-best three kills.
  • Jaylen Campbell did not lag behind with two kills and nine attack attempts.
  • Stanley Sanchez orchestrated York's approach play, leading the team in digs (5) and assists (5). 
For Medgar Evers
  • Abreu led the match with four kills and added four digs.
  • Louis Caiola chipped in with three kills and four digs.
  • Sebastiann Perez recorded a team-best five digs.
  • Austin Romero set up his teammates on seven occasions.

York hit -.138 and finished with more attack attempts than Medgar Evers (29-24). The Cougars held an advantage in points (12-6), kills (8-5), aces (3-1), assists (8-5), and digs (14-2).

  • Medgar Evers blitzed York to a 10-1 start.
  • The teams split the following eight points, with the score being 14-5.
  • An 11-3 spurt for the Cougars closed out the first set. 
  • Austin Romero's ace gave Medgar Evers an 8-1 lead in the second frame. 
  • York claimed three points out of four to make the score 11-5.
  • Avery's ace punctuated a 7-1 run for the Cougars, extending the edge to 18-6.
  • Campbell's kill gave the Cardinals hope down 22-9.
  • The Cougars won the final three points of the set.
  • A 22-2 start to the third stanza gave Medgar Evers a commanding lead.
  • The Cardinals charged late, claiming five of the next six points, including a kill by Stanley Sanchez to make it a 23-7 scoreline.
  • Abreu served out the final ace to seal the victory for the Cougars.

  • Campbell and Stuart each totaled two kills and a block.
  • Winter contributed a career-high in blocks. 
  • Sanchez paced York with a team-best eight assists.
  • Marvin Mondesir led a solid defensive display with four digs.
For Medgar Evers
  • Perez totaled 11 kills and five aces.
  • Abreu also contributed 11 kills and a match-leading 13 digs. 
  • Romero had a match-high 11 aces and quarterbacked the Cougars with 23 assists.

York hit -.237 for the match and had the advantage in blocks (3-2). Medgar Evers attacked at a rate of .220 and outmatched York in points (48-8), kills (27-5), assists (27-4), aces (19-0), and digs (34-15).
