@yorkcardinals Softball celebrates Senior Day in home finale against Hunter

York College is scheduled to return to action next Saturday (May 6) in its CUNYAC regular-season finale at Lehman College

BELLEROSE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball closed out their home slated Tuesday afternoon to celebrate their 2023 senior class on Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Day with a CUNYAC doubleheader against the Hunter College Hawks (11-21, 6-2 CUNYAC) from Padavan-Preller Fields. The doubleheader went away from the Cardinals as York fell 20-1 and 19-0 on Senior Day. Before the opening pitch, senior Shamonie Miller (2018-23) was recognized for her dedication to York Athletics with the annual Senior Day Ceremony.

"I am quite pleased with the outstanding contributions defensively."-said head coach Tracey Marshall following two contests that feautrued solid defensive work

Game 1: Hunter 20, York 1 (5 Inn.)
  • Hunter grabbed the early lead and never looked back, scoring four in the first inning that included a pair of run-scoring doubles.
  • The Hawks broke the game open in the second, producing five runs on six hits to increase their advantage to nine runs.
  • Nayelly Rojas (2-for-2, R, 2 SB) singled in the second to break York into the hit column. She then stole second base and scored following back-to-back wild pitches by Hunter starter Alyssa Curiale (W, 4-2; 5 IP, 3 H, ER, 0 BB, 11 SO).
  • In the fourth inning, Hunter sent 12 batters to the plate to push seven runners across home plate on eight hits to close out the scoring.
  • The Cardinals threatened in the fourth as Rojas laced a single to right and advanced to second on a fielding error.  Rojas then stole third before being stranded.
  • York's Sofia Soric (L, 1-11; 5 IP, 20 H, 14 ER, 7 BB, SO) settled down in the fifth, scattering just one hit to go along with one walk in a scoreless frame.
  • Facing two outs in the fifth, Alicia Gumbs cracked a single to right field, but was unable to move into scoring position as Curiale fanned the final batter to seal the victory for Hunter.
  • Rojas' two singles marked her team-leading fourth multi-hit game of the season.
  • In the end, Hunter outplayed York in hits (20-3) as the Cardinals owned a 2-1 edge in steals. The Hawks worked the count for seven walks and left eight runners while York stranded two on base. Defensively, York committed four errors compared to Hunter's one.
Game 2: Hunter 19, York 1 (5 Inn.)
  • An Olivia Palumbo sacrifice fly gave Hunter a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Curiale (2 IP, 3 SO) retired the Cardinals in order in the bottom of the first.
  • The Hawks extended their advantage to 5-0 in the second frame after two hits and four walks.
  • A 3-RBI triple from Curiale punctuated a seven-run third frame for Hunter, pushing the edge to 12-0 heading into the home half of the third.
  • Coming in for Curiale, relief pitcher Briana Musco worked out of a first and third jam in the bottom of the third by inducing a groundout to Lissenny Florentino.
  • Three consecutive triples by the heart of the order for Hunter helped them take a 17-0 lead in the fourth stanza.
  • Musco got out of trouble again in the fourth by striking out Tyler Dazey with a runner on third base.
  • The Hawks added two runs on four walks to take the total to 19-0 in the fifth.
  • Musco (W, 1-0; 3 IP, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 0 ER, 3 SO) sealed the victory after Melanie Guerrero grounded out to second base.
  • Sofia Soric (L, 1-12; 5 IP, 13 H, 16 BB, 19 ER) was the pitcher of record for York.
  • Ultimately, the Hawks edged the Cardinals in hits (13-0), extra-base hits (5-0), walks (16-2), and stolen bases (6-1).
  • On the defensive side, Hunter did not commit an error while York had a season-low one folly.
