@yorkcardinals Softball charge late in CUNYAC-opening doubleheader versus Baruch

York College remains at home Wednesday (Apr. 12) for a doubleheader against Brooklyn College

BELLEROSE, NYĀ --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball returned to action Monday afternoon with a CUNYAC-opening doubleheader against the Baruch College Bearcats (8-4, 2-0 CUNYAC), charging late in the twin bill, but ultimately falling 19-0 in the opener before a 23-3 setback in game two from Padavan-Preller Fields.

"We facedĀ a strong opponent and we were able to learn from our earlier at bats and make contact. We stepped into the box with confidence. Once on base, we were unstoppable with our speed."-said head coach Tracey Marshall.

Game 1: BaruchĀ 19, York 0Ā (5 inn.)

How it Happened
  • The Bearcats jumped ahead early by sending 14 batters to the plate in the opening inning to take a 9-0 lead.
  • York threatened in the first with a lead off single by Shamonie Miller, followed by back-to-back thefts on the base path.Ā  With runners in scoring position, Baruch's retired two-straight on strikes to escape out of the jam.
  • Baruch capitalized on two errors by York in the second to score six more runs.
  • With a runner on second and one away in the bottom of the frame, Damaris Adames (W, 1-0, 5 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 10 SO) induced a strikeout and ground out to end the threat.
  • Shamonie Miller's baserunning prowess got the Cardinals in scoring position in the bottom of the third, but a strikeout from Nayelly Rojas kept the game at 16-0.
  • Helped by a Carly Quint triple, Baruch pushed its lead to 17-0 after the top of the fourth.Ā
  • A walk, hit, and three errors produced two more runs for the Bearcats in the fifth stanza, making the score 19-0.
  • A 1-2-3 bottom of the 5th sealed Baruch's 19-0 victory.
  • Baruch outplayed York in hits (8-1), extra-base hits (5-0), and stolen bases (8-3).
  • Sofia Soric (L, 0-4; 5 IP, 8 H, 13 ER, 15 BB, SO) threw a complete game for the fourth time this season.
Game 2: Baruch 23, York 0 (5 inn.)
  • Buoyed by an inside-the-park homerun from Mila Arias, Baruch raced out to a 6-0 start.Ā
  • The Bearcats displayed their offensive force in the second inning, as they utilized eight hits to take a 16-0 advantage.Ā
  • A single and two stolen bases from York's Andrea Wright gave the Cardinals a chance in the second inning, but a Madison Plaza ground out ended the threat.Ā
  • A banging triple to left from Julia Cuttone helped Baruch extend the edge to 20-0.
  • In the circle, Cuttone made a great catch to start a double play in the bottom of the third frame, keeping the score at 20-0.Ā
  • Three hits and three errors saw the Bearcats push the lead to 23-0 in the top of the fourth.Ā
  • Piecing together baserunners, York got on the board in the bottom half as three Cardinals crossed the plate. With runners on first and second, Rojas broke York's scoring ice to single home Lissenny Florentino.Ā Soric, who walked to reach base for the fourth-straight game, then scored on a fielder's choice, and two batters later, Wright tallied the final run on a fielding error.Ā Ā
  • York put the pressure on Baruch in the fifth as Miller got it going with a single to extend her hitting and reached base streaks to six games.Ā Miller proceeded to steal second for her CUNYAC-leading 18th stolen bag of the season prior to advancing to third on a wild pitch before Cuttone (W, 1-0, 5 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 ER, 10 SO) punched out the final two batters to seal a 23-3 victory for Baruch.
  • Across the affair, Baruch maintained the edge in hits (16-4), walks (16-1), extra-base hits (8-0), and stolen bases (7-6).
  • Soric (L, 0-5; 1 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 10 BB) was tagged with the loss while Rojas (4 IP, 12 H, 10 ER, 10 BB) finished the game for York.
