York College returns to action Friday (Apr. 14) at Brooklyn College for a CUNYAC doubleheader

BELLEROSE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball got off to a slow start Wednesday afternoon and were unable to recover as the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (5-12) claimed a non-conference doubleheader sweep by the way of 16-0 in game one before a 15-1 setback in the finale from Padavan-Preller Fields.

Game 1: Brooklyn 16, York 0 (5 Inn.)
  • The Bulldogs jumped ahead early by sending 13 batters to the plate in the opening inning to take a 8-0 lead.
  • Isabella Frank's two-RBI double punctuated a five-run top of the second to give Brooklyn an 11-0 edge.
  • A double and three walks pushed Brooklyn's lead to 14-0 in the third.
  • Starter Danielle Guzzardi (W, 4-11; 5 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 12 K) mowed down York's lineup in the third frame 1-2-3.
  • Brooklyn extended its advantage to 16-0 in the top of the fifth via a two-run single from Sandra Diaz (2-for-2, 4 RBI, R, 2 BB, SB) to settle the scoring.
  • Guzzardi struck out the side in the last inning to complete her perfect game.
  • The Bulldogs outplayed York in hits (12-0), walks (16-0), and stolen bases (3-0).
  • Defensively, York committed a season-low two errors.
  • Sofia Soric (L, 1-6; 5 IP, 12 H, 16 BB, 14 ER, 3 SO) recorded the loss.
Game 2: Brooklyn 15, York 1 (5 Inn.)

"I am really pleased with Lissenny's multi-hit performance. Melanie was impressive defensively today, tracking in center field."-said head coach Tracey Marshall about the efforts of Lissenny Florentino and Melanie Guerrero

  • Sparked by a two-run triple from Yasileidy Paulino (3-for-3, 4 RBI, R, BB, SB), Brooklyn blitzed York for seven runs in the opening frame.
  • Lissenny Florentino (2-of-3, SB) broke York into the hit column with a one-out single to center field before getting thrown out in an attempt to steal second to end the Cardinals' threat in the bottom of the first.
  • Soric fanned Melanie De La Cruz to limit the Bulldogs to one run in the second after stranding three on base.
  • The Bulldogs extended their lead to 11-0 in the third frame following a hit, a walk, and three errors.
  • York cashed in a run in the bottom of the third, as Alicia Gumbs (1-for-2, R) singled and eventually crossed the plate on an error.  Guzzardi (W, 5-11; 4 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 8 SO) settled down to escape out of the jam by inducing an inning ending ground out to leave three runners on base.
  • Dasha Goodman flared a two-run single into left field to give the Bulldogs a 14-1 lead in the fourth.
  • Madison Plaza singled with two outs in the fourth but was unable to advance following an inning-ending strikeout.
  • Melanie Millan's RBI single in fifth added a 15th run to Brooklyn's tally.
  • Florentino collected her first-career multi-hit game with a two-out single in the fifth.  She then stole second for York's first runner in scoring position since the third before Millan (1 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) struck out Soric to seal the 15-1 victory.
  • Soric (L, 1-7; 6 H, 3 ER, 7 BB, SO) tossed three innings in the circle, allowing three earned runs as the Cardinal defense committed six miscues. Nayelly Rojas (3 H, 3 ER, 5 BB) worked the final two innings in relief.
  • In the end, Brooklyn held the advantage in hits (9-4), walks (12-0) and stole bases (4-1).  Both teams drew even by abandoning five runners on the basepath.
