www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball opened the 2023 campaign Tuesday on the road, increasing their output throughout the match despite falling in straight sets (25-3, 25-5, 25-9) to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (5-8, 1-3 CUNYAC) in a CUNYAC matchup from West Quad Center Gymnasium.
"The guys were nervous while playing their first match, but the only way to go will be up. We kept our serves in and kept up in digs. We just have to work on consistency." said head coach Anthony Reyes
How it Happened
- The Cardinals jumped ahead first as Ahmed Algendy dished out York's inaugural point of the season as Jaylen Campbell nailed down a kill for a quick 1-0 advantage.
- Tommy Min served five-straight aces during Brooklyn's 11-0 spurt to take control of the first stanza that saw the Bulldogs notch 10 strikes on their way to a 25-3 set point.
- Brooklyn started hot in the second and never looked back, going up 12-0 before finishing with nine-unanswered points.
- Algendy served York's lone ace to open the third-set scoring to give the Cardinals the early edge.
- Brooklyn regained the lead and maintained a double-digit lead for the last-20 points.
- The Cardinals saved their best for last, scoring five of the final-nine points to close out the match after trailing 21-4.
Leading the Cardinals
- Algendy captained York's offense with five assists, three kills in five swings to go with one ace.
- Campbell slammed a team-best four and added four digs.
- Stanley Sanchez chipped in one kill on a team-leading 19 attempts and scooped four digs.
- Alex Winter (three digs) and Marvin Mondesir (two digs) contributed to York's defensive front.
For Brooklyn
- Min finished with 12 points, 10 aces and 18 assists to pace Brooklyn to victory.
- Wai Lin followed with nine points on seven kills and two aces.
- Aziz Abdusamiev netted two blocks and Dion Csikortos tallied six digs.
Inside the Box Score
- York attacked at a rate of -.174 while the Bulldogs hit .476. Brooklyn owned the edge in assists (20-8), aces (18-1), blocks (3-0), digs (22-14).
