www.YORKATHLETICS.com)York College softball continued their six-game homestand Friday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Valley Forge Patriots (5-5), falling 18-1 in the opener before a 13-1 setback in game two from Padavan-Preller Fields.
Game 1: Valley Forge 18, York 1 (5 Inn.)
- Valley Forge scored all the runs it needed in the opening frame, crossing the plate three times on York starter Sofia Soric (L, 0-3; 5 IP, Â Â Â 9 H, 14 ER, 22 BB, SO), who went the distance for the third time this season.
- Following nine runs in the top of the inning, York answered with its lone run of the game in the second stanza. After working a walk, Nayelly Rojas (0-for1, BB, SB, R) swept second and advanced to third on a ground out before scoring on a passed ball.
- In the third, Soric pitched a scoreless inning while Shamonie Miller (1-for-2) collected York's lone hit with a one-out single.
- Valley Forge tacked on three more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to seal the victory.
- Ronae Young (W, 2-1; 3 IP, ER, H , 2 BB, 5 SO) was Valley Forge's winning pitcher while Harley Wakeman (ND; 2 IP, 4 SO) pitched two scoreless frames.
- The Patriots owned the edge in hits (9-1), extra-base hits (2-0), stolen bases (2-1) and walks (22-2).
- On the base path, York stranded two runners while the Patriots abandoned 11.
Game 2: Valley Forge 13, York 1 (5 Inn.)
- The Patriots guided six runs home in the first inning on seven walks off Rojas (L, 0-5; 5 IP, 5 H, 16 BB, 12 ER).
- York scored their only run in the game in the bottom half. Miller (1-2, BB, R) worked a leadoff walk, and two batters later advanced to third on a single by Rojas before crossing the plate on a fielding error.Â
- Helped by Jeanna Garsik's two-run single, Valley Forge piled on five runs in the second inning to extend its advantage to 11-1.Â
- Threatening in the home portion of the second frame, Alma Romero was thrown out at third base with two outs following a bullet single from Miller.Â
- With runners in scoring position with two down, Madison Plaza robbed Garsik of a hit in the third frame to strand three Patriots on base.Â
- The Cardinals threatened in the bottom of the inning with Soric drawing a walk, but was unable to advance past second as an interference ruling against her ended York's rally.Â
- Two errors in the fourth inning pushed the Patriots' lead to 13-1.
- Rojas tossed a scoreless fifth inning, striking out Elisa Davila swinging before stranding two runners.
- Laura Medio (W, 2-3; 3 IP, 2 BB, 5 SO) sealed the 13-1 scoreline for Valley Forge by striking out the side in the fifth frame.Â
- Despite allowing a season-low five hits, York was outplayed by Valley Forge in hits (5-2), walks (12-4) and stolen bases (2-0).
- The Patriots left seven runners on base compared to York's four.Â
