@yorkcardinals Softball erupts offensively against Yeshiva

York College opens its home slate on Wednesday (Mar. 22) against College of Mount Saint Vincent

BRONX --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball came to play Sunday afternoon, scoring 30 runs on 20 hits and 14 stolen bases in a non-conference road doubleheader against the Yeshiva University Maccabees (2-4), producing 13 runs in a 26-13 loss in game one before scoring a season-best 17 runs in a 30-17 setback in the second encounter from Bahoshy Field.

Game 1: Yeshiva 26, York 13 (5 Inn.)
  • Sofia Soric broke York into the hit column with a triple in the first inning. The Cardinals were unable to take advantage as Soric was picked off at third base.
  • Yeshiva plated six runs in the bottom of the frame on two hits, four walks, and two errors.
  • The Cardinals made it a 6-2 ballgame in the second as Nayelly Rojas and Andrea Wright scored on a passed ball and throwing error, respectively. 
  • Rojas tossed a clean bottom of the second for York's first one-two-three frame of the season.
  • York threatened in the third stanza with runners on second and third before Yeshiva's Alexis Leibowitz (W, 1-4; 5 IP, 10 H, 1 BB, 1 ER, 7 SO) induced a strikeout and ground out to end the rally.
  • Three runs in the home half of the third pushed the Maccabees' advantage to 9-2.
  • Paced by hits from Soric (3-for-4, 3 R, RBI) and Rojas (3-for-4, 3 R, 3 RBI, 4 SB), the Cardinals racked up five runs in the fourth to pull within two (9-7).
  • The Maccabees put the game out of reach with 17 runs (eight unearned) in the bottom of the fourth on four hits, 11 walks and three errors to lead 26-7.
  • Soric, Rojas, and Shamonie Miller (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 SB) spearheaded a six-run scoring spree in the fifth to settle the 26-13 final.
  • The Cardinals owned the edge in hits (10-8) and stolen bases (7-3) while both teams drew even in extra-base hits (2-2).
  • Yeshiva was able to work the count, resulting in a 16-1 advantage in walks. 
  • Rojas (L, 0-3; 4 IP, 8 H, 12 ER, 16 BB, 3 K) fanned a career-high three batters and went the distance for the second time this year to take the loss.
Game 2: Yeshiva 30, York 17 (5 Inn.)
  • Lisseny Florentino laced a single to shortstop to drive home Miller for the first of three first-inning runs to grab York a 3-0 advantage.
  • Yeshiva responded with five runs to take a 5-3 lead going into the second.
  • York jumped ahead with a four-run frame that was keyed by Rojas' RBI single to score Florentino to make it a 6-5 game.  
  • Rojas handed out three-straight free passes with two outs that pushed across two of Yeshiva's three runs to knot the game up at seven.
  • Buoyed by two stolen bases by MIller, and extra-base knocks from Rojas, Wright, and Madison Plaza, York scored eight runs in the third frame to extend the lead to 15-7.
  • Helped by three hits and four errors, the Maccabees trimmed their deficit to three (15-12) after three innings.
  • Rojas' triple to center field extended York's lead to 17-12 in the fourth.
  • In the bottom half of the frame, Yeshiva racked up 18 runs on seven hits, eight walks, and seven errors, opening up a 30-17 advantage.
  • Alexis Leibowitz (W, 2-4; 5 IP, 10 H, 4 BB, 5 ER, 5 SO) induced a game-ending ground out with runners on the corners to ensure a 30-17 triumph.
  • York flexed its muscles offensively to finish with the upper hand in stolen bases (7-3), extra-base hits (4-1)
  • Yeshiva had the upper hand in hits (11-10), walks (18-4).
  • In the end, Yeshiva left nine runners on base compared to York's five. 
  • Defensively, York committed 13 errors as Yeshiva made six. 
  • Rojas (L, 0-4; 4 IP, 11 H, 9 ER, 18 BB, 2 SO) pitched a complete game for the third time this year to take the loss.
  • The 17 runs scored were York's highest total since crossing the plate 16 times against Brooklyn College on April 25, 2019.
