Gumbs’ 29 carries @yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball against WestConn

York College returns to action January 3 with a CUNYAC matchup at John Jay College

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball ended 2023 play Saturday afternoon with a home showdown against the Western Connecticut State University Wolves (2-8), losing a wire-to-wire 101-50 non-conference decision inside York College Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • A competitive opening quarter, Alicia Gumbs sank a jumper to pull York within four (10-6). 
  • Trading baskets, Gabrielle Franks canned a jumper to give the Wolves a 23-14 edge heading into the second frame. 
  • Leading 30-19, WestConn went on an 18-2 sprint over the final 6:24 to extend the lead to 48-21 at intermission. 
  • The Wolves outscored York 27-10 in the third quarter to take a 75-31 lead.
  • WestConn won the last period 26-18 to claim a 101-50 victory. 
  • Gumbs scored nine points during a fourth quarter that saw York tally 18 on its way to record a season-high 50 points. 
Leading the Cardinals
  • Gumbs paved the way with an efficient 29 points (8-of-18 FG, 3-of-4 3FG, 10-of-14 FT), and team-highs in rebounds (8) and assists (3).
  • Madison Plaza added a career-best 16 points, hauled in seven rebounds, and swatted away two shots. 
  • Nadaysia Nivar and Tamicia Sylvester both provided a presence on the defensive end by totaling one steal apiece.  
For WestConn
  • Gabrielle Franks dominated with a game-high 38 points (17-of-32 FG) and 24 rebounds.
  • Alyssa Virtue stuffed the stat sheet with 23 points (9-of-16 FG, 5-of-7 FT), seven assists and six rebounds.
  • Nicole Vivian matched Virtue's seven assist total, while Tyonna Morgan recorded a double-double with 12 points (6-of-12 FG) and 10 boards.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 28.8 percent (15-of-52) from the field, 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from beyond the arc, and 64.0 percent (16-of-25) from the free-throw line. The Wolves shot 45.7 percent (42-of-92) from the floor, 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from 3-point territory, and 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from the stripe. 

Outside the scoreline, WestConn held the edge in rebounds (67-19), assists (32-5), steals (6-3), and blocks (3-2). The Wolves capitalized on transition opportunities, scoring 16 fast break points and 19 points off turnovers.
