www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball showed improved offensive production Monday evening but were unable to erase an early deficit as the Lehman College Lightning (1-8, 1-0 CUNYAC) pulled away to claim a 72-44 CUNYAC-opening decision inside York College Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- A defensive battle early, Alicia Gumbs sank two free throws to slice York's deficit in half (8-4) at the 4:20 mark of the first quarter.
- The Lightning closed the stanza on a 14-0 burst capped off by a triple from Rama Diallo to extend the lead to 22-4.
- Trailing 31-9, the Cardinals went on a mini 6-2 run to trim Lehman's lead to 18 (33-15) with 24 seconds remaining in the half.
- Diallo's buzzer-beating layup pushed Lehman's edge to 20 points (35-15) at intermission.
- Diallo's 3-point bucket with 4:16 left in the third period pushed the Lightning's advantage to over 30 points (50-18) for the first time.
- York closed the quarter on a 10-4 spurt after Madison Plaza hit a tough jumper at the 1:24 mark.
- Gumbs' bucket with 9:32 remaining in the contest chopped Lehman's lead to 24 points (54-30), the closest the Cardinals got the rest of the way.
- Gumbs netted 10 of York's 16 points in the final period as Lehman narrowly outscored the Cardinals by two (18-16).
Leading York
- Gumbs stuffed the stat sheet, scoring a team-leading 27 points (8-of-22 FG, 9-of-15 FT), grabbing a career-high 18 rebounds and totaling a team-best six assists and four steals.
- Plaza recorded her first double-double with 11 points (5-of-13 FG) and 12 rebounds.
- Simone Robinson tied a career-high with five rebounds.
- Nadaysia Nivar and Melanie Guerrero each hauled in four boards.
For Lehman
- Diallo poured in a team-best 27 points (10-of-21 FG, 3-of-7 3FG, 4-of-4 FT) to go along with 11 rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
- Lady Ozoria chipped in with 14 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
- Allerza Pena tallied 10 points (5-of-11 FG), six rebounds, and a game-leading five steals.
- Jordyn Perez added nine points (3-of-7 FG) and four steals.
- Myandra Duquesnay distributed a game-high seven dimes.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 28.6 percent (16-of-56) from the field, 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from downtown, and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the charity stripe. Lehman made 38.7 percent (29-of-75) percent of their field goals, shooting triples at a 31.6 percent (6-of-19) rate and free throws at a 80 percent (8-of-10) clip.
Outside the scoreline, Lehman held the edge assists (23-10), steals (17-8), and blocks (2-1). The Cardinals controlled the glass, outrebounding the Lightning (44-37). Lehman capitalized on transition opportunities, scoring 21 fast break points and 25 points off turnovers.
