@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball paced by Dessources’ 24 points at Baruch

York College returns to home court Friday (Feb. 3) for a CUNYAC matchup against Medgar Evers College

NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball closed out their season series Tuesday evening with the Baruch College Bearcats (11-9, 5-4 CUNYAC) on the road, falling 69-55 in a CUNYAC bout inside ARC Arena. 

How it Happened
  • Trailing 6-2, Baruch went on a 12-3 run to take a 14-9 lead in the first.
  • Kristina Sierra's 3-pointer with 23 seconds left capped off the first-quarter scoring to pull York within two, 14-12.
  • York scored nine of the game's next 13 points to go up 21-18 with 6:57 remaining in the half following a jumper by Alicia Gumbs.
  • D'Andre McRae closed out an 18-2 charge for the Bearcats, as they held a 13-point edge (36-23) with 54 seconds showing on the second-quarter clock.
  • The Cardinals scored four-unanswered points to trim its deficit to 36-27 at the break.
  • Mac-Dege Dessources netted 10 points in the third quarter to chip Baruch's lead to four (44-40) at the 4:48 mark.
  • Baruch finished the third quarter on a 10-2 burst, leading 54-42 heading into the final frame.
  • The Cardinals got to as close as 10 points (62-52) following a pair of Dessources free-throws with 4:52 remaining.
  • Stout Bearcat defense limited York to just three points the rest of the way, closing out a 69-55 victory.

Inside the Box Score

Dessources dominated inside, scoring a team-high 24 points (21-16 FG, 2-of-2 FT). She also recorded six boards and three steals. Ellma Hodzic added 11 points (5-of-11 FG), five rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Gumbs chipped in with 11 points (4-of-14 FG, 2-of-2 FT), six rebounds, and a team-best seven assists. Sierra canned a team-leading two triples to follow with seven points (2-of-4 3FG) and five rebounds. 

Mia Castillo commanded the box score for Baruch, totaling game-bests of 26 points (10-of-18 FG, 4-of-6 3FG, 2-of-2 FT), 10 assists, and eight rebounds. McRae poured in 24 points (11-of-12 FG, 2-of-2 FT), gathered seven boards, and came away with four steals. Elissa Leung added 11 points (4-of-9 FG, 3-of-6 FT) and five assists.  

York was unable to get in a consistent shooting rhythm, hitting on 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the floor, 25 percent (4-of-16) from 3-point territory, and 50 percent from the free-throw line (5-of-10). Baruch landed 51.8 percent (22-of-53) from the field, shooting 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from downtown and 70 percent (7-of-10) from the charity stripe. 

The Cardinals outplayed Baruch in steals (10-6) as Baruch owned the edge in rebounds (35-32) and assists (21-16). While both teams drew even in second-chance points (10-10), Baruch held narrow advantages in points off turnovers (20-15), points in the paint (34-32), and fast break scoring (12-8).

Head coach Kimani Jackson believes Friday's home game against Medgar Evers College could be turning point:

"It should give some confidence to finish regular season strong."
