@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball coasts to 67-28 CUNYAC win over Medgar Evers

York College travels Wednesday (Feb. 8) to CCNY for a CUNYAC matchup

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball controlled the Medgar Evers College Cougars (2-17, 0-10 CUNYAC) Friday night, winning 67-28 in front of the home crowd for a CUNYAC triumph inside York College Gymnasium. 

How it Happened
  • York outpaced Medgar Evers 12-6 in the first quarter. 
  • In the final nine minutes, the Cardinals finished the half on a 23-2 burst to lead by 25 (35-10) at intermission. 
  • An 18-8 third quarter for the Cardinals extended their lead to 35 (53-18).
  • Mac-Dege Dessources drained her first triple of the year with 1:29 remaining in the game. 
  • Ellma Hodzic's layup with 58 seconds left closed out a 67-28 York victory.

Inside the Box Score
Dessources led a balanced scoring effort with 17 points (7-of-17 FG, 1-of-2 3FG). The center also totaled four steals and hauled in a game-high 16 boards to post her 15th double-double of the season.  Hodzic netted 16 points (6-of-11 FG, 3-of-4 FT) and tallied a game-best four assists and seven steals. Kristina Sierra notched a double-double with 15 points (5-of-17 FG, 3-of-12 3FG) and 11 rebounds. Alicia Gumbs added 13 points (5-of-9 FG, 3-of-3 FG), four assists and three steals. Imani Gibson chipped in with a career-high five steals off the bench. 

Sheily Quezada paced the Cougars with 14 points (7-of-16 FG), 10 boards, six steals and two blocks. Jennifer Metra added 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals. 

York shot 37.1 percent (26-of-70) from the floor, 25 percent from downtown (5-of-20), and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line (10-of-15). The Cardinal defense held Medgar Evers to 25 percent (12-of-48) from the field and 9.1 percent (1-of-11) from downtown.

York won the boards battle, 44-27, scoring 12 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds.  The Cardinals also owned the edge in assists (15-5), steals (24-9), points in the paint (40-16), fast break points (14-2) while scoring 30 points off 37 turnovers.  Medgar Evers held the advantage in blocks (3-2).
