@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball scores four in double-digits versus John Jay

York College returns to the court Friday (Jan. 27) at Lehman College for a CUNYAC road encounter

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball fell to the John Jay College Bloodhounds (12-7, 6-2 CUNYAC) 68-65 in a CUNYAC showdown inside York College Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • John Jay raced out to a 6-0 start in under two minutes. 
  • York answered with an 18-4 run to close out the first.
  • A 17-4 burst saw the Bloodhounds turn their eight-point deficit into a five point advantage (27-22) with 4:46 remaining in the first half.
  • Mac-Dege Dessources netted the final six points of the half, as the Cardinals led 28-27 at intermission.
  •  Down six (33-27), Tiffany Bogle sparked a 17-3 spurt for the Bloodhounds, as they took an eight point lead (44-36) at the 3:54 mark of the third.
  • Kristina Sierra's two free throws with 52 seconds remaining in the quarter ended the scoring with John Jay up 49-41.
    After a furious 20-11 run, York took its first lead of the fourth quarter (62-61) with 2:00 showing on the clock.
  • Two free throws by Madison Plaza gave the Cardinals a 65-64 lead with 34 seconds remaining. 
  • The Bloodhounds scored the final four points, all via free throws, to win 68-65.
  • Ellma Hodzic's game-tying half court three at the buzzer fell short.

Inside the Box Score

Hodzic and Alicia Gumbs both led York with 14 points. Hodzic added eight boards, two blocks, and a game-high five steals to her ledger. Gumbs drained 6-of-12 from the field and went 2-of-2 from the line. Dessources posted her 13th double-double of the season, totaling 12 points (4-of-9 FG, 4-of-6 FT) and 10 rebounds to go along with five blocks. Aminata Sagna went for 10 points (4-of-4 FT), seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Imani Gibson netted seven points (3-of-6 FG) off the bench.  

For John Jay, Katie Healy led the way with 16 points (5-of-13 FG, 6-of-8 FT), 14 rebounds, and three steals. Kamryn Hammond added 14 points (3-of-6 3FG, 3-of-4 FT), a game-high six assists, and three steals. Bogle recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, and also posted a team-best four steals. Ashley Zella netted 12 points (6-of-9 FG) to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. Bobbi Green chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

York finished the night shooting 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from 3-point range, and 81.8 percent (18-of-22) from the free-throw line. By comparison, John Jay landed 33.3 percent (24-of-72) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from long distance, and 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the charity stripe.

The Cardinals outplayed John Jay in bench scoring (10-4) and blocks (8-0). The Bloodhounds won the boards battle, 43-37, scoring 18 second-chance points off 18 offensive rebounds. John Jay converted 24 Cardinal miscues into 27 points while owning the advantage in steals (15-9), assists (18-14), points in the paint (32-26).
