@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball rallies late for CUNYAC road win at Lehman

York College faces Baruch College on Tuesday (Jan. 31) in a CUNYAC road contest

BRONX --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball rallied late Friday evening to own a 14-point scoring edge in the final 10 minutes to outlast the Lehman College Lightning (7-13, 3-6 CUNYAC) for a 73-63 CUNYAC road CUNYAC win inside The APEX. The Cardinal victory splits the season series after Lehman pulled out a 60-51 win at York on January 11. 

How it Happened
  • Lehman raced out to an 11-5 start.
  • Alicia Gumbs' jumper for York at the buzzer capped off a 12-3 end of the quarter to lead, 17-14.
  • Behind 24-21, Brianna Barnes' three-point play closed out a 7-0 Lightning run to go up 28-24 with 1:59 remaining in the half. 
    York scored four points in the final tic of the second quarter, as Ellma Hodzic's layup gave the Cardinals a 32-30 edge at the break.
  • Hodzic's jumper at the 7:05 mark in the third gave York a team-high six-point lead (40-34) at that point.
  • Barnes converted two free-throws with 20 seconds left in the quarter to give the Lightning a 50-46 lead entering the fourth.
  • Down 59-54, York went on a 13-2 scoring spree to lead 66-61 with 2:09 remaining in the game.
  • Mac-Dege Dessources scored eight of the final 12 points for the Cardinals on their way to a 73-63 victory.
  • The Cardinals outscored Lehman 19-4 in the final five minutes of the game.

Inside the Box Score

Dessources posted her 14th double-double of the season producing 20 points (6-of-12 FG, 8-of-11 FT) and 13 rebounds (six offensive). Gumbs finished with 16 points (5-of-8 FG, 5-of-6 FT), four assists, and two steals. Hodzic totaled 15 points (4-of-12 FG, 2-of-7 3FG, 5-of-8 FT), five rebounds, and two steals. Aminata Sagna scored 10 points (5-of-8 FG), ripped down 13 boards (eight offensive), and nabbed four steals for her second double-double of the campaign. Kristina Sierra added eight points, five rebounds, and two steals.  

Barnes poured in a game-high 35 points (11-of-23 FG, 12-of-17 FT) and added nine rebounds and two steals to her stat line for Lehman. Ramatoulaye Diallo followed with 13 points (5-of-8 FG) and three steals.

In the end, York shot 35.4 percent (23-of-65) from the field, 22.7 percent (5-of-22) from 3-point territory, and knocked down a season-high 22 clutch free throws at a 73.3 percent (22-of-30) clip. Lehman converted 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the floor, 33.3 percent (2-of-6) from beyond the arc, and 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the stripe. 

York won the battle of the boards, 50-33, scoring 24 second-chance points off 22 offensive rebounds. The Cardinals also owned the edge in assists (10-7), bench scoring (4-0), and turned 18 Lightning miscues into 27 points. Both teams drew even in steals (11-11) and fast break points (12-12) while Lehman outplayed York in blocks (3-0), and points in the paint (32-30).
