BROOKLYN --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer team opened the 2022 season Saturday afternoon at home with a 2-0 non-conference win against the Bard College Raptors (3-1) from Aviator Field. The season-opening triumph was York's first since 2018.
"For such a slow start to our season, I am really proud of our men. This was a gritty win against a well coached Bard team. Our men played with discipline, and they played for each other." - said head coach Courtney Boothe
Bard tested Cardinal netminder
Ahmed Algendy (1-0-0) in the opening 45 minutes as the Raptors outplayed York in shots (9-2) and corner kicks (5-1). After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals broke through just 1:32 in as
Marvin Mondesir beat two defenders to chip the ball past Raptor goalie Walter Schwabauer (3-1-0) for his second-career game-winning goal. Later in the stanza, York doubled its advantage as
Marvin Mondesir headed home a corner kick from
Kervin Mondesir to settle the 2-0 final.
Marvin Mondesir paced York with five shots (four on goal) to produce his third-career multi-goal game. Algendy (1-0-0) stopped seven shots to register his first-career shutout.
Despite taking the loss, Bard held the advantage in shots (19-8), shots on goal (7-5) and corner kicks (11-2). Schwabauer made three saves in defeat for Bard.
The Cardinals (1-0-0) return to action Friday (Sept. 16) against the Saint Elizabeth University Eagles (0-2-1) at 3 PM from SEU Soccer Field in Morristown, New Jersey.
