FLUSHING, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) announced its award winners Wednesday for the 2022 men's outdoor track and field season as York College was recognized with four All-Stars and one Sportsmanship Team honoree.
Following standout performances at the 2022 CUNYAC Championships from Icahn Stadium New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory, seniors
Andrew George and
Shevon Walker, junior
Ryan Lahens and freshman
Hakeem Griffiths all garnered All-Star status. The quartet ran the 4x100 race in a CUNYAC-leading time of 45.82 to capture first place for one of seven combined medals at the year-even meet. The 4x100 win marked George and Walker's second CUNYAC title after reigning victory in 2019.
Griffiths paced the Cardinals at the Championships by producing 37 of York's 55 points as he captured victory in the long jump (5.81m), triple jump (3.16m) and 4x100 relay events. The Brooklyn native also placed second in the 100-meter dash event in 12.06. Griffiths was named the CUNYAC Rookie of the Week for competition from March 21-27. Throughout the season, Griffiths tallied eighth top-5 finishes, including five wins across the long jump, triple jump and 4x100 relay events. Griffiths competed in all six of York's outdoor meets and is the CUNYAC Outdoor Performance list leader in the triple jump and ranks second in the long jump.
George medaled in three events at the Championships to net 22 points. In addition to the win in the 4x100 relay, George finished third in both the 200 (25.24) and 400-meter dash (54.87) events. George's performance in the 400-meter dash at Championships rank him ninth in the CUNYAC. The Brooklyn native competed in five meets to become a CUNYAC Outdoor All-Star for the second time. At the West Point Twilight, George set a personal-record in the 200-meter dash in 24.06. George, who was named a Sportsmanship Team honoree during the indoor season, represented York as one of four members selected to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
Hailing from St. Andrews, Jamaica, Walker garnered CUNYAC Outdoor All-Star status for the second time in his career. Walker became a two-time champion in the 4x100 relay event to close out his career. He competed in five meets in his final season to set personal-records in the 100-meter dash (11.49) at the Coach Omeltchenko Invitational and the 200-meter dash (23.07) at the Yale Springtime Invitational. On the CUNYAC Performance List, Walker ranked third in the 200-meter dash (23.07), fourth in the 400-meter dash (53.97) and was tied for fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.49). Walker was also named the CUNYAC Track Athlete of the Week for competition from March 21-27.
As a product of Brooklyn, Lahens contributed York's 4x100 relay win at the CUNYAC Championships to secure a spot on the All-Star team. Lahens, who competed at four meets in his first season of outdoor, clocked in at 11.34 at the Yale Springtime Invitational to cement the top 100-meter dash time on the CUNYAC Performance List. He also ran the 200-meter dash at the Yale Springtime Invitational in 22.98 to record the CUNYAC's second-best time.
