Students claim victory in 2022 Students vs. Staff Basketball Game

York College students hoisted the trophy with a 57-45 win in the 2022 Students vs. Staff Basketball game on March 31

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the 2022 Students vs. Staff Basketball game inside York College Gymnasium on March 31that resulted in the students capturing the trophy with a convincing 57-45 win.  With the triumph, the students regained the trophy after the staff claimed victory in 2021 with a virtual run/walk challenge triumph a year ago. The game has a deep history at York College, which has always been a great mixer for students and staff.

"We are extremely excited to bring back this long-standing York College tradition, and to provide an opportunity for students and staff to come together in a fun and social setting to connect both on and off the court. This is an opportunity to celebrate the return to campus and the gradual return to normal activities as we navigate the road back from the pandemic and ultimately return to normal," – said Carl Christian, Director of Athletics

Wearing York's home white jerseys, the students were coached by men's basketball junior Devine Chisholm while men's basketball sophomore Austinson Cooke coached the staff team, who sported the Cardinal road black uniforms.  Head athletic trainer/SAAC Advisor Amy O'Connor and recreation aide Aaron Jackson-Kent officiated the game as honorary referees.

The staff kept it close in the early going, trailing 5-4 just 4:27 in. Outscoring the staff with a 9-0 over the next three minutes, the students owned a 16-11 lead after one quarter of play.  Tallying six of the game's next eight points, staff pulled within one (18-17) at the 7:36 mark.  The students went up by 10 (29-19) before taking a 29-22 advantage into intermission.  Over the next 10 minutes, the staff trimmed its deficit to as little as one (33-32) and held a 12-10 scoring edge to trail 39-34 after three quarters of play.  The staff got as close as 39-37 in the final period as the students owned an 18-11 scoring advantage in the fourth to settle the 57-45 win.

"This event is a great way to bring the whole campus community together.  Not only does this game help students and staff show their talent, but it also allows students to obtain a stronger connection with staff in a friendly head-to-head competition," - said Emily Cabrera, SAAC President, women's  softball, swimming, track & field, and volleyball student-athlete
