Dessources’ 43 points push @yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball past Baruch, 77-59

York College returns home Wednesday (Feb. 9) for a CUNYAC matchup against City College of New York


NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.comYork College women's basketball avenged a February 1 home loss against the Baruch College Bearcats (8-8, 6-3 CUNYAC) Monday evening with a 77-59 CUNYAC road win inside ARC Arena.  The victory gave York its third win in four games against Baruch.

How it Happened​​​​​​
  • Both teams battled for control in the early going as Baruch started fast to go up 9-4 just 2:51 in. 
  • The Cardinals regrouped and outscored Baruch 16-4 to build a seven-point cushion (20-13) with 1:17 left in the opening period. 
  • In a first half that featured three lead changes and four ties, Baruch trailed 34-27 before putting together a 9-2 run to close out the half to send a 36-all game into intermission. 
  • Baruch held a brief 44-41 lead with 6:54 showing on the third-quarter clock prior to York pulling in front to play ahead for the final 15:57. 
  • Mac-Dege Dessources broke a 48-48 game with a layup to ignite a 13-0 Cardinal spurt before holding a 61-53 edge heading into the final stanza. 
  • York's lead blossomed to a game-high 20 points (77-57) with a 16-4 scoring surge to open the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Dessources scored 24 of her career-best 43 points (20-of-32 FG) in the first half to set a single-game program scoring record previously held by Kelly Allen (39 points vs. Brooklyn College, Nov. 27, 1995) and Tamara Taylor (39 points vs. The College of New Rochelle, Feb. 10, 1999).  She led the Cardinals to victory with her 36th career double-double (seventh of season), adding 25 rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals to her statline to cement the win.  Ellma Hodzic followed with 15 points (6-of-9 FG, 3-of-6 3FG), seven assists (tied season-high), four rebounds, three blocks and two steals.  Kristina Sierra registered 15 points (7-of-12 FG) while Aminata Sagna pulled down 14 rebounds to go along with six assists and two steals.

For the Bearcats, Mia Castillo contributed 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and one steal.  Milly Ye followed with 13 points (6-of-10 FG), four rebounds, one block and one steal.  Melinda Spahiu registered 12 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and seven steals.

York finished the contest shooting 57.4 percent (35-of-61) from the field, 50 percent (4-of-8) from three-point range and 30 percent (3-of-10) from the free-throw line as Baruch connected on 32.5 percent (25-of-77) from the floor, 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from beyond the arc and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the charity stripe.  The Cardinals won the rebounding battle, 56-27, scoring 24 second-chance points off 18 offensive rebounds.  York outscored Baruch in the paint (54-12) and edged the Bearcats in blocks, (5-1).  Both teams drew even in assists (22-22) while Baruch held the advantage in steals (12-7) and scored 24 points off 29 York turnovers.
