York College women's basketball jumped ahead early and were unable to hold on for the win Thursday evening as the John Jay College Bloodhounds (11-7, 6-2 CUNYAC) pulled away with a 59-48 CUNYAC road win inside York College Gymnasium to sweep the season series.
How it Happened
- The Cardinals clamped down defensively in the opening period, limiting John Jay to just 1-of-17 shooting from the field.
- Following a jumper by Katie Healy that sliced John Jay's deficit in half, 6-3, York scored 11-unanswered points in the final 5:19 to take a commanding 17-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- John Jay opened the second stanza with a 12-3 run to pull within five (20-15) at the 5:16 mark.
- Alicia Gumbs converted a pair of field goals on back-to-back possessions 55 seconds later to push York's lead back to eight (24-16).
- The Bloodhounds held a slim 8-7 scoring edge in the final 3:32 to trail 27-23 at the break.
- John Jay scored five-straight points to open the half to take its first lead (28-27) of the game 51 seconds in.
- Playing with the lead for the opening 20:51 of play, York was unable to slow the Bloodhounds as John Jay continued a 12-5 spurt to go up by five (37-32) with 3:44 left in the period.
- Trailing 39-36 entering the fourth quarter, York fell behind after a slow start that allowed John Jay to build a 10-point cushion (48-38) with 5:41 showing on the clock.
- John Jay later extended its lead to 11 to settle the 59-48 final.

Kristina Sierra led the way for the Cardinals with 15 points (6-of-12 FG, 2-of-4 3FG) and 10 rebounds. Mac-Dege Dessources registered her 35th career double-double (sixth of season) with 15 rebounds and 14 points to go along with one block. Ellma Hodzic pitched in 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists and one block. Aminata Sagna contributed 14 rebounds and three blocks.
For the Bloodhounds, Bobbi Green registered 18 points, seven rebounds and one block. Ashley Zeolla followed with 16 points (7-of-13 FG), eight rebounds and one steal. Healy grabbed 24 rebounds (tied career-high) and added 13 points and three steals to the win.
York concluded the game shooting 23.6 percent (17-of-72) from the field, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from outside the arc and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the charity stripe while John Jay connected on 30.7 percent (23-of-75) from the floor, 11.1 percent (1-of-9) from three-point range and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the free-throw line. The Cardinals won the boards battle, 61-57, pulling down 22 offensive rebounds to generate 17 second chance points. York outplayed John Jay in assists (11-9) and blocks (5-0). The Bloodhounds held the advantage in steals (8-0) and scored 10 points off 16 York turnovers.
