www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball opened the 2022-23 season with an 83-52 setback Tuesday evening on the road against the Kean University Cougars (1-0) in a non-conference encounter inside Harwood Arena.
How it Happened
- Leading from wire-to-wire, Kean jumped out to a 13-2 advantage 6:27 in.
- Both teams traded buckets for the next 2:16, with York outscoring the Cougars 10-9 during that stretch.
- Kean played with a double-digit advantage for the final 33:18, using an 18-5 burst to extend their lead to 40-17.
- The Cardinals closed out the half by scoring nine of the next 15 points to trail 46-26 at intermission.
- York got as close as 17 points as Devine Chisholm drained a 3-pointer to help the Cardinals outscore Kean 5-2 through the opening 4:36 of second-half play.
- The Cougars responded, outpacing York 20-9 over the next 5:07 to increase their lead to 28 (68-40)
- Both programs traded hoops for the final 10 minutes, as Kean's Vaughan Laki Anderson's three with 0:27 remaining capped off the scoring to put the Cougars' lead to a game-high 31 points.
During the Cardinals run at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second period, the team played a 2-3 zone.

Terrell Fullerton and Chisholm reached double figures for the Cardinals, scoring 15 (5-of-12 FG, 4-of-6 FT) and 13 points (3-of-7 3FG).
Matthew Smiley had a solid all around game, chipping in nine points (4-of-7 FG) and was a presence inside, grabbing nine rebounds and recording a game-high three blocks.
Averi Parker flashed defensive versatility, rallying seven rebounds and a team-best four steals. Running the offense,
Matthew Trepeta had a team-high four assists.
Griffin Barker paced Kean to victory with 23 points (10-of-16 FG) as Heem Burno manufactured a triple-double by registering 10 points, 12 assists, 11 rebounds, and four steals to his stat line. Letrell West (18 points) and Jailen Jamison (16 points) added double-digit scoring efforts.
York finished the game shooting 31 percent (18-of-58) from the field, 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from 3-point range, and 45 percent (9-of-20) from the free-throw line as Kean drained 46.1 percent (35-of-76) from the floor, 33.3 percent (10-of-30) from long distance and 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from the charity stripe. In the end, York owned the edge in blocks (6-2) and steals (10-9), while Kean outplayed the Cardinals in assists (23-11) and converted 18 turnovers into 21 points. Kean also won the boards battle, 56-37, scoring 15 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds.
