@yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball close out road trip at Maritime

York College returns to the hardwood Saturday (Nov. 12) for its home opener against DeSales University

THROGGS NECK, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball closed out a brief two-game road trip Thursday evening with a competitive 60-53 defeat against the SUNY Maritime College Privateers (2-0) in a non-conference matchup from Riesenberg Gymnasium in Throggs Neck. The two teams previously met during the 2019-20 season, with York winning an 83-70 decision on home court.

How it Happened
  • The Cardinals jumped ahead with a bucket from Terrell Fullerton to break the scoring ice 51 seconds in.
  • Maritime answered with five-straight points to grab the first-half lead for good.
  • York tied the game four times during the opening 20 minutes.
  • Following a Fullerton trey to pull York within three (23-20), Maritime extended its advantage to seven with four free-throws by Robbie Mitchell to take a 27-20 edge into the break.
  • Trailing by a game-high 11 points (37-26) after a Ryan Donovan step back jumper, the Cardinals scored nine-consecutive points, cutting the deficit to two points with 12:50 left.
  • Trading baskets for almost 10 minutes, the Privateers held a 50-47 edge when head coach Mike Berkun called a timeout with 3:13 remaining.
  • Fullerton leveled the score at 50 with a deep triple at 2:07.
  • Tyler Anderson took back control for Maritime, draining a triple on the next possession.
  • Mitchell essentially sealed the victory for the Privateers, making a fast-break layup with 55 seconds left to push the advantage to 55-50.
Asked about the team's second half run, head coach Jamel Gist responded:

"Our pressure in the 2nd half was a bright spot on the defensive end. Averi [Parker] and Shamal [Grant Jr.] provided instant sparks off the bench which gave our group a huge lift on the defensive and offensive side of the ball."

Inside the Box Score
Fullerton poured in 10 of his game-high 26 points during the first half and added two steals to his stat line. The junior guard had an efficient shooting night, connecting on 10 of his 18 shots, including going 4-of-8 from downtown and making his only two free-throw attempts. Matthew Smiley played another solid game, pulling down eight boards to go along with seven points, including a clutch three to cut the deficit to 50-47. Parker contributed a team-high nine rebounds off the bench.

"Terell is a special talent and continued to find holes in the defense to create offense."-Coach Gist added

Anderson scored 22 points (9-of-11 FG, 3-of-4 3FG) to pace three Privateers in double-digit scoring. Following Anderson were Ryan Donovan and Mitchell, who scored 14 and 13 points, respectively. Donovan captained Maritime's offense with a game-high five assists while Aleksandar Begovic reeled in 11 rebounds (game-high).

Both schools almost canceled each other out shooting-wise. York shot 36 percent (21-of-59) from the field, 25 percent (6-of-24) from three-point range, and 71 percent (5-of-7) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Maritime shot 37 percent (21-of-57) from the field, 23 percent (6-of-26) from long distance, and 80 percent (12-of-15) from the charity stripe. Scoring-wise, the Privateers' seven more made free throws were the difference.

Maritime had more rebounds (42-34), assists (11-9), steals (8-4), blocks (6-1), and second-chance points (8-6). While each team committed 15 turnovers, the Privateers' held the edge in points off turnovers (17-11). The Cardinals outscored Maritime on the fast break, 10-6.
