Dessources makes history as @yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball topples Valley Forge, 76-49

York College returns to the court next Saturday (Nov. 26) to take on Pratt Institute in a non-conference matchup

PHOENIXVILLE, PA --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball produced their ninth member of the 1,000-point club Saturday as Mac-Dege Dessources scored 23 points to lead the Cardinals to a 76-49 non-conference road win against the University of Valley Forge Patriots (1-3) inside The Pit.  

With 3:20 remaining in the first half, Dessources dropped in a layup to net her seventh point of the game to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. On November 12 against Sarah Lawrence College, Dessources grabbed her 1,000th-career rebound and is now the program's inaugural member of the 1,000/1,000-club for points and rebounds.

How it Happened
  • York outscored Valley Forge 12-4 early on, with all 12 points coming from Desources and Ellma Hodzic
  • Hodzic connected on a triple to ignite a 13-3 scoring spree over the final 7:32 to give York a 16-7 advantage after the first quarter. 
  • The Cardinals continued to dominate play in the second period, shooting 50 percent (7-of-14) from the field to outscore the Patriots, 18-9.  
  • Valley Forge got as close as nine (18-9) before York scored 16 of the next 23 points to lead 34-16 at the break.
  • During a stretch of 8:14 in the second-quarter surge, Dessources accounted for eight of York's 16 points.  
  • York played ahead for the final 37:36, including a 20-point advantage for the remaining 28:37.
  • Kristina Sierra drained back-to-back 3-pointers to key York's 12-2 run for a 23-point (48-25) cushion with 3:47 showing on the third-quarter clock. 
  • York opened the final stanza with a 9-4 spurt as Dessources and Hodzic combined for nine points to extend York's largest lead to 30 (64-34). 
Inside the Box Score
Dessources scored 13 of her 23 points (10-of-19 FG) during the opening half and added 15 rebounds (six offensive) to her stat line to record her 44th-career double-double (third of the season). Hodzic also poured in 13 of her season-high 20 points (9-of-16 FG) in the opening 20 minutes to go along with eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Adding to the offensive dominance, Sierra finished with 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Alicia Gumbs dished out four of York's season-high 12 assists. Three freshmen, Beautifull Earth, Faith Howes, and Imani Gibson, all contributed. Howes scored a career-high eight points (4-of-8 FG) off the bench, Imani Gibson added a career-high six points (3-of-5 FG), and Earth played a season-high 22 minutes.

Dominique Barnes paced Valley Forge with 19 points, while Jessi Manning went for 13 points and seven rebounds. Jasmine Hamilton pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds.

In the end, York shot a season-best 47.1 percent (33-of-70) from the field and 83.3 (5-of-6) from the free-throw line while hitting on 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from beyond the arc. The Cardinals limited Valley Forge to 33.3 percent (21-of-63) from the floor, 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from 3-point territory, and 50 (3-of-6) from the charity stripe. York won the boards battle, 39-31, and scored 15 second-chance points off 10 offensive rebounds. The Cardinals also outplayed Valley Forge in assists (12-10), steals (6-3), points in the paint (50-26), bench scoring (10-5), and scored 14 points off 17 Patriot turnovers.
