www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball dominated play Saturday afternoon to defeat the Pratt Institute Cannoneers (0-7) by the final count of 83-39 in a non-conference battle at Medgar Evers College's Dr. Betty Shabazz Invitational inside Cougars Cave.
How it Happened
- Squared at 4-all, York went on a 15-2 burst to take a 19-6 lead with 3:31 left in the first quarter.
- Both teams traded baskets for over nine minutes, as a jumper for Pratt's Kylie Grant cut York's advantage to 11 (30-19) with 4:10 remaining in the first half.
- The Cardinals finished the half on an 11-4 run, capped off by a free-throw from Mac-Dege Dessources with seven seconds showing on the clock.
- York blitzed Pratt in the third quarter, outscoring the Cannoneers by 15 (21-6).
- A layup from Dessources with 15 seconds left in the third stanza made the scoreline 62-29.
- Alicia Gumbs' layup with 6:40 remaining pushed York's lead to over 40 (74-33).
- Grant's field goal for the Cannoneers closed the scoring with 21 seconds on the clock.
Inside the Box Score
York registered plenty of individual accolades that contributed to the win as Gumbs finished with career-highs in points (27), steals (5), and blocks (3). Her 27 points (12-of-18 FG) led all scorers. Dessources chipped in with 26 points (12-of-24 FG) and a game-best 21 rebounds and seven blocks. The center's block total marked a season-high, and the stat line was her 45th-career double-double (fourth of the season).
Ellma Hodzic recorded her second double-double of the season (sixth of her career), totaling 14 points and 12 rebounds to go with seven assists, three blocks and five steals.
Kristina Sierra also got in the action with a career-high six assists and ripped down eight rebounds.
Grant and Kinako Miyake were Pratt's only scorers. Grant dropped a team-high 24 points, and Miyake added 15. Grant also paced the Cannoneers in rebounds (15) and blocks (2).
In the end, the Cardinals shot 44 percent (33-75) from the field and canned a season-best 16 free throws. Meanwhile, York's swarming defense held Pratt to 17 percent shooting (11-66). The Cannoneers were proficient from the charity stripe, connecting on 17 of their 23 attempts.
Along with the edge in shooting, York won the rebound (58-45) and assist (17-0) battles. Additionally, the Cardinals outplayed Pratt in points off turnovers (24-10), second chance points (19-9), fast break points (14-0), and points in the paint (64-10).
