www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball opened their home schedule Saturday afternoon as the DeSales University Bulldogs (2-0) pulled away with a 87-71 non-conference win inside York College Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- York jumped out to a 5-4 lead in the first 3:45.
- DeSales went on a 10-1 run over the next few minutes to open an eight-point advantage (14-6).
- The Cardinals responded with a 9-1 flurry, leveling the score at 15 with 10:29 remaining.
- Both teams traded buckets, and two free-throws gave DeSales a 28-27 lead with 3:31 on the first-half clock.
- The Bulldogs outpaced York 8-3 the rest of the half, capped off by Caleb Gibbs' freebie with one second left to lead 36-30 at intermission.
- DeSales raced out to a 14-2 start in the second half to extend the score to 50-34.
- York chipped away multiple times, cutting the lead to 11 on three occasions.
- Terrell Fullerton's driving layup at 4:32 pulled York within striking distance (74-63) before DeSales closed out with a 13-8 scoring edge.
- Fullerton's layup at 0:20 settled the 87-71 final.
Inside the Box Score
Fullerton and
Olawale Kila led York with 15 points each. Kila shot an efficient 7-of-9 from the floor to catapult him to a career-high in points. Additionally, Kila also paced the Cardinals with a team-high six boards.
Devine Chisholm and
Matthew Trepeta each poured in eleven points, and led the Cardinals with three assists.
Averi Parker contributed off the bench with 10 points.
Shamal Grant Jr. swatted a game-high two shots.
Speaking about the team's offensive performance, head coach
Jamel Gist said:
"Our group is finally starting to get comfortable and was getting a groove in their first home game this season. Guys will continue to move the ball and thrive as the season goes forward."
Ryan Boylan and Elijah Eberly controlled the Bulldogs offensive display. Boylan scored 15 points (7-of-11 FG) and recorded three assists. Eberly chipped in with fourteen points (7-9 FG), dominated the glass with a game-high five offensive rebounds, and was a smooth playmaker, tallying five assists without a turnover. Gibbs, Eberly's frontcourt teammate, grabbed a game-best 11 rebounds to go along with five dimes.
Both schools finished with similar shooting statistics. York shot 44 percent (26-of-59) from the field and 40 percent (10-of-25) from downtown. DeSales shot 49 percent (29-of-59) from the field and 39 percent (9-of-23) from long distance. The Bulldogs had the edge from the charity stripe, making 20 of their 29 attempts. In contrast, the Cardinals only arrived at the line 17 times, connecting nine times.
DeSales utilized their presence inside to their advantage, outrebounding York (40-30), and dominating the points in the paint battle (38-24). The Bulldogs also had more assists (24-15), steals (6-3), points off turnovers (20-9), and second chance points (23-16).
