@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball battles John Jay on Senior Night

York College plays their CUNYAC season finale at Medgar Evers College on Tuesday (Oct. 25)

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball battled Thursday before falling to the John Jay College Bloodhounds (12-9, 5-2 CUNYAC) in straight sets (25-9, 25-7, 25-12) during Senior Night inside York College Gymnasium. Prior to first serve, York recognized Jamelia Jordan as part of the annual Senior Day Ceremony for her dedication to York Athletics.

"Jamelia has been a great addition to the progress of the team. She has grown in all aspects."-said head coach Christy Herring

Down 7-1 in the first stanza, York answered with a 7-1 spurt of their own. With John Jay up 11-9, Kristin Gretener closed out with 14 straight points to seal the set for the Bloodhounds. John Jay asserted their control early in the second frame. Up 4-3, the Bloodhounds rallied off 21 of the final 25 second-set points. Never threatened in the third set, a kill and an ace by Andrea Wright helped the Cardinals reach double digits.

Wright's two points in the third set led York tonight. Indeed, she produced the Cardinals' only ace. Shamonie Miller and Cherub Autar helped defensively, as Autar recorded a team-best eight kills, and Miller had seven. They each finished with one kill as well. Naomi Heras Picon also played well, finishing with a kill and four digs, the third straight encounter where she had at least four digs.

"Naomi had to step into a new role after taking the libero position, which meant she now had to step up her all around game. She has not only filled a void in our lineup but her defense continues to improve."-Herring added

Four players generated seven or more points for John Jay. Rylea Sandel had two aces and a game-high eight kills, Paige Sadowitz contributed seven kills and an ace, Catherine Fleming recorded six kills and an ace, and Gretener added three kills and a game-high four aces.

The Bloodhounds controlled the match in kills (34-4), aces (12-1), assists (34-4), and digs (37-23).

The Cardinals (0-16, 0-7 CUNYAC) visit the Medgar Evers College Cougars (1-16, 0-6 CUNYAC) on Tuesday (Oct. 25) at 7 p.m for their CUNYAC finale from Cougars Cave in Brooklyn.
