@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball produces season-high points against Lehman

York College remains home to host John Jay College on Thursday (Oct. 20) for Senior Night

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball fell Tuesday to the Lehman College Lightning (5-12, 2-4 CUNYAC) in four sets (25-18, 18-25, 25-14, 25-12) during a CUNYAC match inside York College Gymnasium.
The Cardinals raced out of the gate, taking a 5-0 lead on the serve of Naomi Heras Picon. York maintained its advantage at 11-6. Generating a comeback, Lehman held steady at the back, scoring seven unanswered points to take the lead for good.

York took full command of the second stanza. Tied at 8-8, the Cardinals rallied off impressive points that included service aces from Heras Picon and Cherub Autar. At 14-11, York went on a 9-3 spurt to take the lead for good. This set triumph was the Cardinals' first of the season.

"I am very proud of the girls today. They worked hard together to pull out a set and had a taste of what it feels like."-said head coach Christy Herring

Down 6-5 in the third frame, the Lightning rallied off 13 consecutive points to essentially deal the set. 12 of the 13 points started with Selena Mitchell's powerful serve.

Shamonie Miller came out swinging in the fourth set, as her two ferocious kills helped York to a 5-2 lead. Similar to the third stanza, Lehman recovered, gaining four points when Alisson Simon began the rallies and six points on Mitchell's serve. Up 14-8 after Mitchell's service error, the Lightning never trailed by more than six in the final frame.

For York, Miller starred, recording a game-high 13 kills and 53 total swing attempts. Those numbers also obliterated her career-best of seven kills and 28 swing attempts in 2019. Setting up her teammates, Autar led York with 12 assists. Breaking another record, Heras Picon marked a career-high with four aces. Additionally, the Cardinals' 25 points surpassed their season-high of 23 points that came against Medgar Evers last month.

"Shamonie was instrumental in her leadership on the court today. Her ability to lead the team offensively and defensively allowed her teammates to step into new roles and produce more. This was a team effort today."-Herring added

Mitchell, Daria Hernandez, and Alarcon each recorded 10 points or more for Lehman. Mitchell totaled six kills and a game-high seven aces. Hernandez produced two aces and a team-high nine kills. Alarcon added eight kills and two aces of her own. Heder Rodriguez stabilized the Lightning, tallying a game-high 19 assists.

Across the encounter, Lehman had advantages in kills (31-16), aces (14-9), assists (31-15), and digs (46-35).
