BROOKLYN--- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer produced their second shutout of the season after manufacturing a 4-0 CUNYAC win Saturday evening against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (0-15-0, 0-6-0 CUNYAC) at Aviator Field. The clean sheet is York's second of the season, the most since the program posted three in 2014. York's four goals scored were its highest total since tallying four against Medgar Evers on October 13, 2018.
An even half for much of the first stanza, the best chance fell to York's
Doston Abdigaffarov in the 16th minute, but his effort from inside the 18-yard box struck the post. The Cardinals took the lead in the 40th minute when
Mert Zor blasted a shot from over thirty yards past Cougars' goalkeeper Louis Caiola (0-15-0). Zor's strike ended up being the game-winning goal, the first of his career.
"Mert has been an important part of this team all season long. He can play multiple positions because of his work rate. He's capable of much more."-said head coach Courtney Boothe
Riding that momentum, York dominated the second frame, consistently winning duels and creating chances. They took a 2-0 advantage at 55:53 as
Jaden Brown pounced on a loose corner kick in the 6-yard box. The Cardinals added a third when
Emre Sahin tapped home a squared ball from
Jamar Johnson.
Djelili Okoro rounded out the scoring in the 76th minute with a 40-yard banger that looped over a leaping Caiola to settle the final.
Ricardo Dorcil (1-2) once again stood tall in net, making three calm saves. Today's result was his first career collegiate victory.
York held a statistical edge in shots (21-9), shots on target (8-3), and corners (6-3). Strictly focusing on the second stanza, York outshot the Cougars 12-3 and had four shots on goal opposed to zero on goal for Medgar Evers.
When asked about his team's second-half dominance, coach Boothe responded:
"Winning the midfield battle and trying to catch them on the counter was the only way we were going to win this game."
The Cardinals (2-6-0, 1-4-0 CUNYAC) face the Baruch College Bearcats (6-5-0, 4-0-0 CUNYAC) for a CUNYAC road affair on Wednesday (Oct. 19) at 4:30 p.m from Flowers City Park in New Rochelle, New York.
