York College women's basketball tied a season-high with seven three-pointers Friday afternoon to produce a hard fought 62-58 CUNYAC victory against the Lehman College Lightning (2-9, 1-4 CUNYAC) inside The APEX. The Cardinals extended their winning streak to five games against the Lightning dating back to the 2018-19 season.
How it Happened
- Both teams traded baskets in the early going until Kristina Sierra's jumper put York up 10-8 at the 4:06 mark.
- York closed out the final 5:44 in the opening stanza with 13-unanswered points to extend its lead to 11 (19-8) as Ellma Hodzic connected on a pair of three-pointers to cap the run.
- Sierra landed a pair of triples to push York ahead by a game-high 16 points (29-13) with 6:46 left in the half.
- Lehman answered with a 21-5 scoring spree over the final 6:31 to send a 36-all game into the break.
- With the game knotted at 38 in the third quarter, Lehman scored five-straight points to take its largest lead of the game, 43-38.
- Hodzic and Sierra drilled back-to-back from beyond the arc during a critical 12-4 run to regain a 50-47 advantage heading into the fourth.
- York opened the fourth period by scoring seven-straight points to build a 10-point (57-47) cushion with 6:18 remaining.
- Playing ahead of the final 10:27, York held a slim 12-11 scoring edge during the final stanza.
- Trailing 59-49, Lehman pushed back with a 9-1 spurt as six costly Cardinal turnovers allowed the Lightning to trim their deficit to two (60-58) with 1:19 showing on the clock.
- Lehman was unable to ride the momentum, misfiring on all three attempts from the field in the final 1:04 while Alicia Gumbs sealed the win with a pair of made freebies with 15 seconds left to settle the 62-58 win.
Inside the Box Score
Hodzic led all scorers with 19 points (3-of-7 3PT FG) and added five rebounds, four steals and three blocks to the win. Sierra followed with 16 points (6-of-10 FG, 4-of-8 3PT FG) and six rebounds. Gumbs chipped in 14 points (5-of-10 FG), six rebounds and four assists. Mac-Dege Dessources pulled down 14 rebounds and swatted two shots as Aminata Sagna recorded 11 boards and two steals.
Brianna Barnes finished the game with 18 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals and six assists to pace Lehman. Mojisola Shokeye went for 18 points (4-of-12 3FG) and six steals while Chinera Ortiz followed with 14 points and five assists.
York finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field, 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from outside and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the free-throw line as Lehman hit 31.1 percent (23-of-74) from the floor, 27.6 percent (8-of-29) from long range and 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from the charity stripe. The Cardinals commanded the edge in rebounds (49-35) and blocks (5-2). Lehman led the game in assists (15-14), steals (17-6) and scored 26 points off 28 York turnovers.
