York College returns home Tuesday (Feb. 1) for a CUNYAC showdown against Baruch College


NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.comYork College women's basketball dominated play on Sunday afternoon to win their second-straight game with a convincing 69-37 CUNYAC road triumph against the City College of New York Beavers (0-11, 0-7 CUNYAC) inside Nat Holman Gymnasium 

How it Happened​​​​​​
  • Balanced scoring helped York race out to a 10-0 lead with four different Cardinals contributing to the early advantage. 
  • Playing with a double-digit lead for the final 32:06, Ellma Hodzic scored five of her seven first-quarter points in the final 62 seconds of the stanza to make it a 19-2 game. 
  • CCNY got as close as 16 points (21-5) in the second quarter before Mac-Dege Dessources and Alicia Gumbs each scored six during a 14-4 Cardinal spurt in the final 5:18 to send York into the break with a 39-12 edge.  
  • Scoring six-straight points to open the third period, York pushed its lead to 33-points to jump out to a 45-12 advantage at the 6:52 mark. 
  • The Beavers answered with a 13-0 scoring spree as Monae Laing netted 10 during that stretch to trim CCNY's deficit to 20 (45-25) with 1:19 showing on the third-quarter clock. 
  • Leading 49-25 after 30 minutes, York outscored CCNY 20-12 in the fourth quarter to cruise to a 32-point wire-to-wire win.

Pacing York in scoring for the third time in four games was Hodzic, who poured in 20 points (8-of-16 FG, 2-of-5 3FG, 2-of-2 FT) to go along with 11 rebounds, seven assists (one turnover) and three steals.  Dessources followed with 17 points (8-of-13), nine rebounds, four blocks and two steals.  Gumbs tallied 16 points and registered career-highs of seven assists (one turnover) and four steals.  Kristina Sierra went for 10 points and six rebounds while Aminata Sagna grabbed 10 rebounds.  
 
Laing finished with game-highs of 21 points (4-of-7 3FG) and 16 rebounds to lead CCNY.  
 
York hit on 46.2 percent (30-of-65) from the field, 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from three-point territory and 50 percent (5-of-10) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals outplayed CCNY in assists (21-8), steals (10-5) and blocks (4-0) while winning the battle of the boards, 47-36, scoring 11 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds.  York limited its turnovers to a season-low nine miscues while scoring 19 points off 15 Beaver giveaways.  CCNY misfired on 14-of-15 attempts in the opening period and finished the game landing 25.9 percent (15-of-58) from the floor, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from long range and 50 percent (3-of-6) from the stripe.
