@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball pushed to overtime at John Jay

The Cardinals return home on Tuesday (Feb. 1) for a CUNYAC matchup against Baruch College


NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.comYork College women's basketball were unable to hold a fourth-quarter lead after finishing Tuesday's game shorthanded, resulting in a heartbreaking 88-83 CUNYAC setback in overtime against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (9-6, 4-1 CUNYAC) inside The Doghouse. 

How it Happened​​​​​​
John Jay broke the scoring ice 1:56 in before Kristina Sierra drilled a three-pointer to put York on the board at the 7:39 mark.  
  • After Ashley Zeolla answered with a layup to give John Jay a 4-3 lead, Sierra connected from deep to put York up with 6:53 remaining in the first-quarter.  
  • The Cardinals went on a timely 8-2 spurt as Ellma Hodzic scored six points in the final 3:36 to close out the opening stanza with an 18-10 advantage.  
  • York caught fire in the second quarter with back-to-back triples by Hodzic, followed by a Sierra long ball to make it a 27-13 game with 8:56 left in the half.  
  • The Cardinal lead grew to 14 points in the second quarter before taking a 12-point cushion (42-30) into the break.  
  • John Jay chipped away at its deficit to close within eight points (47-39) with 6:07 left in the third quarter.  
  • Hodzic closed out a key 12-1 run by scoring nine straight-points to push York's lead to 19 points (59-40) 3:27 later.  
  • York outplayed John Jay in the third period to extend its lead to a game-high 21 points (63-42) after holding a 21-12 scoring advantage.  
  • John Jay regrouped in the fourth quarter to open with a 7-0 spurt.  
  • Aminata Sagna ended York's drought with a layup to make it 65-49.  
  • After Hodzic fouled out, the Cardinals played with four players on the court for the final 6:06 of regulation as John Jay outscored York 23-9 during that stretch.  
  • The Bloodhounds continued to push with a 15-3 scoring spree to trail 68-64 with 2:42 showing on the fourth-quarter clock.  
  • Sierra sank a jumper to bring York's lead back up to six (70-64).  
  • John Jay then scored seven of the game's next nine points to pull within one (72-71) with 38 seconds left.  
  • With 21 seconds remaining, Sierra fed a layup to Mac-Dege Dessources for a 74-71 lead.  
  • The Bloodhounds answered with a Jordyn Ruiz jumper with 15 seconds left to draw within one (74-73).  
  • A pair of costly Cardinal turnovers and two missed free-throws by York gave John Jay second life, allowing John Jay to extend the game into overtime with a Bobbi Green game-tying free-throw with two seconds left.  
  • York played with the lead for a span of 37:44 before Ruiz stuck a jumper in overtime 51 seconds in to put John Jay in front, 78-76.  
  • In the extra frame, both teams traded leads in the early going until York used a 7-2 spurt to go up by three (83-80) with 2:26 remaining.  
  • Dessources fouled out at the 2:18 mark, causing York to play with three players for the rest of the way as John Jay put the game away with 8-0 unanswered points to settle the 88-83 final.  
Inside the Box Score
Dessources ended the contest with 29 points, 20 rebounds and a season-high seven blocks to notch her 33rd career double-double.  Hodzic scored a season-high 26 points (8-of-15 FG, 4-of-8 3PT FG), and recorded seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.  Sierra added 13 points (5-of-7 FG, 3-of-5 3FT), nine rebounds and five assists.  Alicia Gumbs chipped in 10 points (4-of-8 FG) while Sagna pulled down eight rebounds.  

Katie Healy finished the game with 32 points (12-of-24 FG), 11 rebounds and seven steals. Green added 26 points, seven steals and six rebounds. Jordyn Ruiz contributed 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. 

York finished the game making 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the field, 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from outside and 62.1 percent (18-of-29) from the free-throw line as John Jay hit 37.6 percent (35-of-93) from the field, 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from long range and 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from the free throw line. The Cardinals held the edge in rebounds (61-51) and blocks (9-2). John Jay outplayed York in assists (18-12), steals (21-4), and scored 44 points off 41 York turnovers.
