York College women's basketball continued their CUNYAC road schedule Friday evening with a 77-47 setback against the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (11-2, 6-0 CUNYAC) inside West Quad Center Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- Coming off Wednesday's CUNYAC-opening win against Hunter College, the Cardinals were unable to produce a win after starting slow against the reigning conference champions.
- Alicia Gumbs broke the scoring ice 1:16 in to give York its lone lead of the game.
- Brooklyn answered with 12-unanswered points to play with a double-digit advantage for the remaining 34:07 of play.
- With a 17-4 game heading into the second stanza, both teams had a balanced attack over the next 10 minutes as Brooklyn held a 14-12 scoring edge to lead 31-16 at the break.
- Mac-Dege Dessources opened the second-half scoring with a layup to pull York within 13 points (31-18) at the 9:43 mark.
- After getting as close as 13, York was unable to push past the Bulldogs as Sarah Labiner dropped in two points moments later to extend the Brooklyn lead to 21 (41-20) with 7:26 showing on the the third quarter clock.
- Brooklyn grew its lead to a game-high 32 points (77-45) with 2:04 remaining in the game.
Inside the Box Score
Ellma Hodzic led the Cardinals in scoring with 16 points and added nine rebounds and four steals to her statline. Dessources followed with 13 points, seven rebounds and one block. Gumbs netted 12 points (5-of-10 FG) and hauled in seven boards. Aminata Sagna showed off her playmaking abilities with a career-high eight assists, while also grabbing nine rebounds. Kristina Sierra contributed to the Cardinal defense with two steals.
Chanel Jemmott led Brooklyn to victory with 27 points (9-of-16 FG, 8-of-9 FT), 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Ericka James scored 20 points as Labiner tallied 16. Destiny Drummond captained Brooklyn's offense with 13 assists.
York ended the contest converting on 34.5 percent from the field (20-of-58), 11.8 percent from three-point territory (2-of-17) and 50 percent from the free-throw line (5-of-10) as Brooklyn hit on 41.8 percent from the floor (28-of-67), 25 percent from beyond the arc (6-of-24) and 75 percent from the charity stripe (15-of-20). The Cardinals pulled down 12 offensive rebounds to score 15 second-chance points. Brooklyn outplayed York in assists (27-14), steals (13-6) and rebounds (39-34) while scoring 23 points off 28 Cardinal miscues.
