Dessources’ double-double boosts @yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball past Hunter for CUNYAC-opening win

The Cardinals remain on the road Friday (Jan.21) for a CUNYAC matchup against Brooklyn College


NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.comYork College women's basketball took the court Wednesday evening for the first time since last competing on December 14 to produce a hard fought 66-61 CUNYAC road win against the Hunter College Hawks (3-10, 0-4 CUNYAC) inside Hunter Sportsplex. The CUNYAC-opening triumph is York's first since the 2015-16 season while also snapping an eight-game losing streak against Hunter for their first victory over the Hawks since February 16, 2016.

How it Happened​​​​​​
  • The Cardinals kept pace with the Hawks in the opening minutes until Hunter took a 19-8 lead after a Kristina Krslovic three-pointer with 2:47 remaining in the first period.
  • York cut the lead to five points (21-16) by the end of the first following layups by Mac-Dege Dessources, Alicia Gumbs and Ellma Hodzic
  • Playing from behind for the majority of the first half, York trailed 24-18 until Kristina Sierra drilled a timely triple to ignite a 10-2 run to jump ahead, 28-26, at the 4:50 mark. 
  • Hunter regained the lead to go back up by four (32-28) before York rallied to score nine of the game's next 12 points to hold a 37-35 advantage at the break.   
  • The momentum carried into the second half as the Cardinals locked in defensively to hold Hunter to just 1-of-20 shooting from the field during the third stanza. 
  • York played ahead for the final 20:04 and outscored the Hawks in the third quarter, 10-2.
  • With some newfound transition scoring, the York lead ballooned to 12 (49-37) with 9:27 showing on the fourth-quarter clock for their largest advantage of the contest. 
  • Hunter charged late with a 15-7 spurt to close within three (62-59) with 35 seconds left. 
  • The Cardinals iced the 66-61 victory by sinking 4-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final 32 seconds. 
Inside the Box Score
Dessources contributed a team-high 24 points (11-of-19 FG) and 19 rebounds (seven offensive) to go along with two steals and one block to post her 32nd-career double-double (third of the season).  Sierra followed with a season-best 16 points (4-of-9 3FG) and nine rebounds (tied career-high).  Hodzic added 15 points (9-of-12 FT), 11 rebounds, five steals and four assists to register her third-career double-double.

Kimberly Lau led all scorers with 27 points (9-of-20 FG) and added five steals and five assists for Hunter.  Krslovic followed with 12 points (4-of-10 3FG), eight assists and six rebounds.

York finished the evening shooting 45.3 percent from the field (24-of-53), 26.6 percent from three-point range (4-of-15) and 56 percent from the free-throw line (14-of-25) as Hunter hit 29.7 percent from the floor (22-of-74), 31.8 percent from long range (14-of-44) and 60 percent from the stripe (3-of-5).  The Cardinals won the boards battle, 49-40, scoring 15 second-chance points off 11 offensive rebounds.  York also held the edge in points in the paint (36-14) and blocks, (4-3) while Hunter led the game in assists (18-9) and steals (11-9).
