JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's tennis was active in the community on August 26 when they attended an event at nearby Det. Keith Williams Park, in which reigning U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka was back on the tennis courts where she started to practice her play.
The event featured Osaka's return to Det. Keith Williams Park in Jamaica to check out the court that was recently refurbished by the sports drink company BODYARMOR with some of the young athletes in the Naomi Osaka Play Academy.
Head coach
Gemma Alexander-Mozeak, along with assistant coach
Sean Roker and student-athletes Kacey Clarke, Geraldine Guese, Monique James and Nayelly Rojas attended the event.
In addition to children getting a chance to play with a tennis pro, Osaka conducted a Q&A session as the event helped promote the game of tennis to children in the neighborhood. Liberty Tennis, a non-profit local group that has been teaching inner-city kids, allows one child at a time the opportunity to dream big and pay it forward.
"These programs and the participation of our student-athletes in them are great for a number of reasons. They are great recruiting opportunities as our team is seen by potential student-athletes, parents and tennis enthusiasts who may be considering college tennis for themselves, their children or others. They are tremendous opportunities for our student-athletes to engage in service to the community by assisting with young, beginner players. And of course, it's just GREAT fun for us. After all, we are as excited as everyone else to be around our sports heroes and sheroes." - York College head coach Gemma Alexander-Mozeak
