BROOKLYN --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer cracked open their home schedule Saturday afternoon with a non-conference battle against the Trinity Washington University Tigers (2-5-0) from Aviator Field. The Cardinals trailed 1-0 at intermission and conceived a pair of second-half goals to drop a highly-contested match.
Trinity Washington broke the scoring ice in the 23rd minute with a Heather Kierzek goal that slipped past a diving Cardinal goalie
Stephanie Gutierrez (0-2-0) for the 1-0 lead. York tested Tiger goalie Emily Andino (2-5-0) with its first shot in the 37th minute on a strike by
Emilin Cajamarca that landed on target.
York dialed it up offensively in the final period but was unable to convert despite firing five shots (four on goal) during the opening 18:05 of second-half play. Kalyn Whiteheart answered York's attack to stretch the lead for a two-goal advantage in the 61st minute. After
Taylor Bellmon's shot hit the post at the 77:38 mark, Bintia Bah replied by extending the Tiger advantage in the 79th minute to settle the scoring.
Gutierrez turned away seven shots and faced 20 attempts. Emily Andino made five saves to preserve the Tiger victory. Bellmon and Cajamarca both put up two shots to lead York on offense. York outplayed the Tigers in corner kicks (5-2), while Trinity Washington finished with the edge in shots (20-7) and shots on goal (10-5).
The Cardinals (0-2-0, 0-0-0) return to the pitch on Wednesday (Oct. 6) for a CUNYAC-opening showdown against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (2-4-0, 0-0-0) at 12 p.m. from College Point Field. At present time, spectators are not permitted at College Point Field. Visit
