Jeremy Sapeg has been recognized by the CUNYAC as the 2019-20 Men's Swimming Sportsmanship Award selection, announced Friday afternoon by league officials.
"I am grateful and honored to be recognized with this award," said Sapeg. "This is a true testament of the culture of our program at York."
After recovering from Stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Sapeg returned to the pool for York's final five meets of the season to become the program's first-ever Sportsmanship Award honoree. Up until Jeremy's season debut on January 7 at Western Connecticut State University, he supported the program from the pool deck as team manager throughout his eight weeks of chemotherapy.
"Jeremy used this unfortunate illness to help motivate other student-athletes to give their all in academics and in sport," said York head coach Samantha Oyola. "He swam with high hopes and pride and his spirit and commitment as a student-athlete at York is truly deserving of this recognition."
York has now placed five members on the Sportsmanship Team in six seasons.
