@yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball splits season series with Hunter

York College returns home Friday (Jan. 31) for a CUNYAC showdown against Lehman College


MANHATTAN --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball settled for a split of the season series with the Hunter College Hawks (6-13, 5-4 CUNYAC) after dropping a 75-52 CUNYAC road decision Tuesday evening inside Hunter Sportsplex.  

Hunter raced out to a quick 4-0 lead before Jean-Luc Etienne sliced York's deficit in half with a jumper at the 18:27 mark.  The Hawks then used a 14-4 run to go up by 12 (18-6) with 10:32 remaining in the period.  The hosts stretched their first-half cushion to 25 prior to Guillermo Hernandez sinking a jumper with 52 seconds left to cut Hunter's lead to 23 (41-18) at intermission. 

Playing with a double-digit lead for the final 31:25, Hunter extended its margin to a game-high 31 points (63-32) with 12:25 showing on the second-half clock.

Mambe Koureissi poured in 12 points to lead York while Devine Chisholm scored all 10 of his points (4-of-8 FG, 2-of-2 FT) in the second half.  Guillermo Hernandez grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and added six points off the bench.    

Gio Gabbidon led Hunter with a game-high 15 points (6-of-7 FT).  Jonah Bevacqua dropped in 13 points while George Keener and Melvin Collins each scored 12.

York shot 32.8 percent from the field (19-of-58), 7.7 percent from 3-point range (1-of-13) and 65 percent from the free-throw line (13-of-20) as Hunter hit on 43.9 percent from the floor (25-of-57), 41.7 percent from long distance (10-of-24) and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe (15-of-18).  The Cardinals outrebounded Hunter by 11 (43-32) and put back 13 second-chance points off 17 offensive boards.  York also controlled the paint with a 32-28 scoring margin while Hunter outplayed the Cardinals in assists (21-5), steals (8-3), blocks (3-2) and points off turnovers (14-7).

The Cardinals (6-13, 2-7 CUNYAC) return home Friday (Jan. 31) to take on Lehman College Lightning (11-7, 6-2 CUNYAC) in CUNYAC action starting at 7:30 p.m. inside York College Gymnasium.
