BROOKLYN --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer took an early lead Saturday evening in their return home before allowing a series of unanswered goals to fall 6-1 in non-conference action to the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions (2-1-0) from Aviator Field in Brooklyn.
Gisselle Flores-Barajas wasted little time scoring her team-leading second goal of the season with a quick strike 25 seconds in for York's early lead. The score was the fastest in program history, passing Ana Lales' mark of 32 seconds set during a 12-0 triumph against Medgar Evers College on October 13, 2013.
Two costly York fouls in the box allowed the Nittany Lions to capitalize on penalty kicks. Allyson Holtz delivered the equalizer at 10:38 while Allison Barr put away the game-winning goal in the 21st minute to build a 2-1 advantage. Following Penn State Abington extending its lead to 4-1, Flores-Barajas and
Taylor Bellmon both attempted shots in the closing minutes of the half.
After being outshot by 20 (23-3) in the opening stanza, York closed the gap to a shot differential of four (9-5) in the final 45 minutes with Flores-Barajas, Bellmon and
Damata Usman accounting for the Cardinals' five attempts. In a second period that saw an improved Cardinal defense, the Nittany Lions closed the final score with goals in the 53rd and 62nd minutes.
In goal for York,
Chelsea Vasquez (0-4-0) stopped 13 shots to reach double-digits in the save department for the third-straight game. Her counterpart, Morgan O'Loughlin (2-1-0) made three saves to claim victory for the Nittany Lions.
The Cardinals (0-4-0) remain at home Wednesday (Sept. 11) for a 2 p.m. non-conference showdown with the College of Saint Elizabeth Eagles (0-2-0) from Aviator Field in Brooklyn.
