www.YORKCARDINALS.com)Â York College softball tied a season high with eight runs scored in Sunday's finale, but were unable to keep pace with the University of Valley Forge Patriots (3-12), falling 11-0 and 22-8 in non-conference action from Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
Game 1: Valley Forge 11, York 0 (5 Inn.)
Cayleen Conrad (3-for-3, 3 R, 2 RBI) led off the opening frame with a single and scored what proved to be the game-winning run two batters later on a RBI double by Lindsay LeSueur (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 3 R) for the 1-0 lead on Cardinal starter
Rosenery Chicaiza (L, 0-5: 4 IP, 6 H, 11 R, 5 ER, 7 BB).
The Patriots broke the game open with a two-run double by Conrad as part of a six-run second inning to grow an 8-0 advantage. Â
York threatened in the third, but were unable to capitalize as
Shamonie Miller (1-for-2, 2 SB) and
Dorianny Rojas both slapped one-out singles before LeSueur (W, 2-5: 5 IP, 3 H, 7 K) retired two-straight Cardinals to escape out of the jam. Â
Chicaiza stroked a single in the fourth inning for York's final hit of the game. Â
Miller reached base to lead off the fifth on an error by Conrad in left field. Â She then stole second and advanced to third prior to being stranded after LeSueur fanned her third batter of the frame to settle the 11-0 final.
Game 2: Valley Forge 22, York 8 (5 Inn.)
Isis Funez (3-for-4, 2 RBI, R) put the Cardinals in the hit column with a one-out single and came around to score on Lesueur (W, 3-5: 3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, ER, 4 K) two batters later as
Ashley Alcantara single for the first inning lead. Â
Valley Forge answered with 11 runs in the home half of the first off Chicaiza (L, 0-6: 4 IP, 23 H, 22 R, 20 ER, 3 BB).
Lesueur (3-for-4, 4 RBI, 2 R) opened the Patriot scoring with a two-run triple while a Tiffany Tharp (4-for-5, 4 RBI, 3 R) RBI single 10 batters later scored Conrad (2-for-4, 4 R) for the game-winning run to put Valley Forge up 9-1. Â
Trailing 17-1 in the fourth inning, York responded with five runs off Conrad. Â Chicaiza singled and scored before Rojas (2-for-3, 2 RBI, R, BB) laced a two-run single and Funez drilled a two-run double to cap the big inning. Â
Miller closed the scoring books in the fifth inning with a single to advance
Melissa Noble (0-for-1, 2 R, 2 BB) and
Mary Cuevas (0-for-1, 2 R, 2 BB) across home plate. Â
The Cardinals (0-10) remain on the road Tuesday (Apr. 9) for a non-conference doubleheader against the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (12-11) at 3 p.m. from Mary Levine Field in Bronxville, New York. Â Â
