BELLEROSE, NYÂ --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com)Â York College softball earned a hard-fought game two victory Thursday afternoon in extra innings with a 16-15 triumph against the visiting Brooklyn College Bulldogs (3-21, 1-11 CUNYAC) from Padavan-Preller Field. Â The two teams opened the day by picking up Monday's rain-shortened game in the fifth inning as Brooklyn prevailed with a 15-1 win.
Game 1 (5 Inn.): Brooklyn 15, York 1
Brooklyn put the game away with a 10-run opening inning on Cardinal starter
Dorianny Rojas (L, 0-6: 5 IP, 10 H, 15 R, 11 ER, 7 BB, career-high 8 K). Â Chanel Jemmott (2-for-3, 3 RBI, R) reached on a fielder's choice to plate home Anna Curran (2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 R) for what proved to be the game-winning run for a 2-0 lead. Â
Trailing 15-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Rojas singled off Megan Ortiz-Mengedoht (W, 2-13: 5 IP, 2 H, ER, 4 BB, 5 K) to break a no-hit bid. Â Rojas then stole second before scoring on a
Mary Cuevas RBI single that settled the 15-1 final.
Game 2 (9 Inn.): York 16, Brooklyn 15
Rojas (W, 1-6: 9 IP, 9 H, 15 R, 2 ER, 10 BB, 5 K) retired Brooklyn 1-2-3 in the top of the first before leading off York's opening frame with a single. Â She then stole two bases and Cuevas (4-for-5, 4 RBI, 2 R) advanced Rojas (3-for-6, 3 R, RBI, BB, career-high 4 SB) and
Isis Funez across home plate for the 2-0 first inning lead on Ortiz-Mengedoht (L, 2-13: 8.1 IP, 18 H, 16 R, 7 ER, 10 BB, 3 K).
After Brooklyn took a 3-2 lead in the third inning,
Nicole Ovelheira (career-high 5-for-5, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB) ignited York's four-run frame by doubling, one of her single-game program-tying five hits, to drive in Cuevas for a 6-3 advantage. Â
The Cardinals committed four errors that led to five unearned runs in the fourth inning for Brooklyn's 8-6 lead. Â
York pulled within one (8-7) in the fourth inning as a wild pitch scored Ovelheira.
Brooklyn tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to make it a 10-7 game. Â
The Cardinals then forced extra innings by tying the game with three runs in the seventh. Â Rojas led off with a double, stole third, and two batters later scored on Cuevas' sacrifice. Â With two outs,
Nicolasa Restituyo (3-for-6, 2 RBI R) stepped to the plate and drilled a two-run double to score Ovelheira and
Rosenery Chicaiza. Â
Brooklyn appeared to have the game put away in the eighth by scoring four in the inning, but the Cardinals had something else in mind. Â
Valentina Pozo opened the inning with a RBI single, and two batters later, Rojas scored on a fielding error by first baseman Melanie Garate (3-for-5, 5 RBI, R). Â The Cardinals then ripped back-to-back RBI doubles by Cuevas and Ovelheira to cap the big inning.
The see-saw battle continued in the ninth inning with Brooklyn scoring one before the Cardinals replied with
Shamonie Miller's game-tying RBI, and two batters later, Rojas worked a bases loaded walk to score Restituyo for the game-winning run. Â
York produced season highs of 16 runs and 18 hits. Â The 16 runs were the most since scoring 24 against University of Valley Forge (Apr. 8, 2018), while the 18 hits is York's highest total since producing 18 on April 25, 2014 versus College of New Rochelle.
The Cardinals (1-17, 1-9Â CUNYAC) are back in action Friday (Apr. 26) at 1 p.m. for a Senior Day CUNYAC doubleheader against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (11-17, 5-3 CUNYAC) from Padavan-Preller Field. Â Prior to opening pitch, seniors
Nicole Ovelheira (2016-19),
Nicolasa Restituyo (2019) and
Argenis Morales (2019) will be honored with the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to York College athletics.
