@yorkcardinals Softball concludes road slate at New Rochelle

The Cardinals return home Monday (Apr. 29) for a CUNYAC Senior Day doubleheader versus John Jay College


NEW ROCHELLE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball closed out their 10-game road schedule Sunday afternoon with 13-0 and 16-0 non-conference loses to the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels (15-17) from Flowers Park In New Rochelle, New York.
 

Game 1 (5 Inn.): New Rochelle 13, York 0

Samantha Gutierrez led off the New Rochelle first inning with a single and then scored on a three-base throwing error by Cardinal starting pitcher Rosenery Chicaiza (L, 0-11: 4 IP, 12 H, 13 R, 5 ER, BB) for the game-winning run.  Three batters later, the Blue Angels doubled their advantage with a Chicaiza throwing error that allowed New Rochelle's second unearned run to score.

The Cardinals threatened in the second inning with Nicole Ovelheira reaching base on a throwing error by third baseman Sienna Stockton.  Valentina Pozo was hit by a pitch by New Rochelle starter Gabby Hay (W, 10-11: 1 H, 10 K) three batters later before Indonesia Green struck out to strand two Cardinals on base.  

Trailing 10-0 in the fourth, Ovelheira collected her 87th-career hit with a one-out single to account for York's lone hit of the game.  Hay worked out of the jam and retired her next five batters to secure the win.
 

Game 2 (5 Inn.): New Rochelle 16, York 0

The Cardinals opened game two with Dorianny Rojas working a leadoff walk and then moved into scoring position by registering her team-leading ninth stolen base of the season.  Blue Angel starter Valerie Romano (W, 4-4: 5 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 6 K) bounced back to retire York's next three batters. Hay contributed a two-run shot to center field to score Gutierrez for the game-winning run in the first inning.  New Rochelle put the game away with six runs scored on six hits and two errors off Chicaiza (L, 0-12: 0.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 BB) in the first frame.

York then placed a runner in scoring position with a single and a stolen base by Chicaiza in the second inning.  The Cardinals also reached base in the fourth with Nicolasa Restituyo advancing to first on a throwing error by shortstop Amanda Blair, and in the fifth as Green was handed a free pass for York's final baserunner.  

The Cardinals (1-19, 1-9 CUNYAC) are back in action Monday (Apr. 29) at 1 p.m. for a CUNYAC Senior Day doubleheader against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (11-17, 5-3 CUNYAC) from Padavan-Preller Field.  Prior to opening pitch, the 2019 Softball Senior Class consisting of Ovelheira (2016-19), Restituyo (2019) and Argenis Morales (2019) will be honored with the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to York College athletics.
