JAMAICA, N.Y. — The York College (N.Y.) men's volleyball team (2-12, 0-3 CUNYAC) hosted Brooklyn College (5-6, 1-1 CUNYAC) on Tuesday night for a conference matchup and fell 3-2 (25-0, 21-25, 25-17, 11-25, 9-15) in a hard-fought battle.
Brooklyn forfeited the first set due to lateness and play began in the second with York leading the match 1-0.
Kevin Campbell rattled off three-straight aces for the Cardinals to tie the second set up at 10 early on. However, the Bulldogs used a 9-1 run soon after to take a 20-14 advantage and gain control. The visitors went on to win the first 25-21 in an evenly matched period in which Brooklyn narrowly outhit York .241-.222.
Campbell was feeling it in the second as well scoring 11 of York's points in the period as they went on to win 25-17 and retake the lead overall at 2-1.
Akil Vaughn also shined for the Cardinals in the second slamming back-to-back kills for the set-clinching points.
York was inefficient in the fourth hitting just .059 compared to Brooklyn's .391 hitting percentage and 12 kills as they won the frame convincingly (25-11). The score was 7-6 in the visitors' favor early, but they ran away with a 13-3 run to assert themselves and force a fifth set.
The Cardinals went up 3-0 immediately in the fifth, but Brooklyn put up seven unanswered points to jump ahead 7-3. They didn't look back winning the final frame 15-9 as they picked up their first league victory of 2019.
Campbell totaled 16 kills (.538), eight digs, five aces, and two block assists. Vaughn added 12 kills and six digs.
Juan Rodriguez dished out 27 assists in the loss and
Mambe Koureissi chipped in five kills, three digs, and two block assists.
Next up for the Cardinals is another home match tomorrow (Mar. 6) at 7:30 p.m. versus Fontbonne University (Mo.).
