Fontbonne Proves Too Much for Men’s Volleyball

JAMAICA, N.Y. — After falling in a hard-fought, five-set, CUNYAC loss last night, the York College (N.Y.) men's volleyball team (2-13) dropped another home match, this time against Fontbonne University (Mo.) (15-1) in straight sets on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals led within the first couple of points of set one, but Fontbonne asserted themselves afterwards racing out to an easy 25-10 victory and 1-0 advantage. York only could muster four digs and three kills in the frame as the Griffins were powered by three kills apiece from Cameron Graves and Braden Woolsey.

Set number two was more of the same, but York saw improvement as Kevin Campbell slammed five kills and two blocks in the frame and they hit .091 compared to their -.250 percentage in the first. Despite this, Fontbonne won 25-14 as Graves put up six more kills in the second.

Akil Vaughn entered the game in the second and found his stride in the third hitting three kills in the final set, but it wasn't enough as Fontbonne won 25-14 again to complete the sweep. The Griffins hit .424 on the game and had at least five kills from four different players to secure victory.

For the Cardinals, Campbell finished with 10 kills, four digs, four total blocks, and three aces. Philton Paul had three digs and three kills and Juan Rodriguez added 13 assists in the loss.

Next up for the Cardinals is a CUNYAC tri-match on the road playing Medgar Evers and Baruch on Saturday (Mar. 9) beginning at noon.
