@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball opens 2019-20 campaign at Ramapo

York College remains on the road Saturday (Nov. 23) to take on Susquehanna University on day one of the Susquehanna Trailways Tournament (Nov. 23-24)


MAHWAH, N.J. --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball opened the 2019-20 season Wednesday evening on the road with an 80-44 non-conference setback to the Ramapo College Roadrunners (5-0) inside Bradley Center in Mahwah, New Jersey.

Ellma Hodzic's jumper 2:25 in put York on the board for its first points of the season to make it a 2-2 game.  Trailing by seven (14-7), York scored 11 of the game's next 19 points, ignited by Daniesha Newsome scoring six to slice the deficit to four (22-18) heading into the second period.  The Cardinals were outscored by 16 points in a second quarter that saw York shoot just 15.4 percent from the field while being pressured into giving away 12 turnovers as Ramapo led 42-22 at the break.  

Both teams traded baskets in the early goings of the third quarter before Ramapo put the game away with a 16-7 spurt to close out the final 5:04 of the stanza.  Ramapo played with a 30-point lead for the final 8:56 and outscored York by 16 in the second half.  

Newsome paced the Cardinals with 10 points while Destenee Bailey also contributed off the bench with seven points.  Mac-Dege Dessources rejected a game-high three shots and added six rebounds and two steals to her statline as Hodzic contributed a team-leading seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. 

Alie Wickersheim poured in a game-high 20 points for Ramapo while Jessica Repasy, Cherie Smedile and Jenna Harsh each scored 11. 

In the end, Ramapo outrebounded York, 44-40, and scored seven second-chance points off eight offensive boards.  York swatted three shots compared to Ramapo's two as the Roadrunners scored 22 points off 26 Cardinal turnovers and also held the advantage in assists (22-8), steals (12-4), points in the paint (26-10) and bench scoring (34-23).

The Cardinals (0-1) are back in action Saturday (Nov. 23) at 8 p.m. to take on the Susquehanna University River Hawks (1-1) on day one of the Susquehanna Trailways Tournament (Nov. 23-24) from Orlando W. Hours Gymnasium in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.
